I've always been intrigued by the idea that people living on boats may eventually be viewed by the public in a similar way to pikeys.
There are increasing incidences of "pikey like" behaviour in the boat dwelling population. I have observed it over the years.
It would be a great shame if this happened because living on boats is seen as a positive by most I believe. If it becomes viewed as a negative that is when regulations come in to make it more awkward.
I tend to think people would not become abusive for no reason.

"There's no excuse for abuse and rudeness. But there is an issue with the state of some of the boats and the rubbish left alongside them. The rubbish is unsightly, especially in the beautiful countryside near Bradford-on-Avon, is potentially injurious to wildlife, and could pollute the waterway itself. If the boats are unsafe, they are a hazard to the occupants and other canal users. I remember a lot of money was raised after one gentleman's boat sank, but it doesn't seem to have been spent on restoring his boat or removing the debris. On the canal stretch between Bath and Bradford-on-Avon there are several what appear to be unsafe or abandoned boats. Out of curiosity, does anyone know who this could be reported to?"
"If those good honest boaties are now likening their boats to homes. I can assure you the council would be knocking on their door for leaving piles of rubbish on the side of the road in front of their house. I think the council have to be aware of double standards here."
"The council has contributed £1,000 towards the Floaty Boat Fund, a boater's initiative run by and for them, with a further £l,000 in funding coming from the Wiltshire Council Area Board." - oh, can Wiltshire Council give us some money? Our blacking/dry dock expenses are coming up this June! Give us the money or we will LEAVE RUBBISH ON THE BANK!!

So if we take exception to some ones behaviour, we can take the law into our own hands and verbally or physically abuse them?

So if we take exception to the laws of the land and social norms and etiquette, we can dump rubbish all over the towpath, have no regard for safety or health, and simply do as we please?

No that's not appropriate behaviour kris.
A couple of years ago a mad ranting bloke stopped opposite our mooring and poured all of the expletives out of his mouth at us. Without exaggerating I mean he really did go for it "Come out of your boats you fucking scum. Cunts. Get out here and confront me you fucking scum" etc etc. Loud. My children were a bit upset. Afterwards one of them a (5 at the time) asked me "Is he going to break the fucking boat?. We were inside the boat but it was very loud and direct.
Anyway he came round to the entrance to the moorings and carried on ranting. I went to a neighbour and asked him to come with me. The bloke was heavily bollocksed.
Anyway he said "stop burning illegal fuels on your fucking fires you cunts!"
Neighbour explained it is smokeless fuel, got phone out to take a pic and bloke legged it.
I later found out who he is. Ian is actually an OK bloke he apologised for alarming the children . Went to the pub with him had a couple of pints and a nice chat. Turns out traumatic childhood and his dad was a coal man and he has bad memories of coal and coal fires. Plus he's a head case who likes ketamine. Nice enough bloke though being fair.
Repeated abuse towards a particular individual would probably be a different thing but some people are just ranty in general.

There are appropriate authorities to report anything to you think is wrong to, cart have plenty of powers to deal with abandoned or dangerous boats? The picture of the boat you have posted with the rubbish on it. Is it even on the K&A? Let alone at Bradford upon Avon.

I see a boat with someone on it, that might need a bit of help. its a very sad society we are sleep walking into.Where every body has to conform to societies norms, or run the risk of being attacked. ps it looks like the springer has been rebottomed at some time.

That's sounds quite serious, I'm sure it wasn't pleasant for your children. It was completely unwarranted, you should be able to get on with your life without having to deal with idiots like this. I wonder what the reaction would be if I started abusing some f the residents of Bradford upon Avon? I don't think it would be long before I saw the inside of a police station.
