That’s the problem. The word ‘positivity’ does nothing. Doing something about it, or changing things (like medication, focus, lifestyle etc) does help. That is the good side to positive thinking, but you can't wish away severe pain.
Maybe you can but trying less extreme methods is often worth a go. What’s extreme about those methods? What less extreme methods do you suggest?

This morning, Ive been diagnosed with the onset of osteoarthritis in my left leg / ankle (which Ive had pinning operations on after a serious racing accident 15 years ago) resulting in my being unable to walk for a few days when it flares up.🙄 Ive led a completely drug free existence for onwards of 25 years ( with the exception of getting arseoled on Stella ) so dont particularly want to be loading up with / getting addicted to painkillers etc, but have noticed a sharp increase in attacks this winter. I presume, with this forum being used predominantly by owd duffers, its basically an elephants graveyard afterall, that others on here could suffer such stiffness / pain etc so how do you deal with it? Are there any hippy / treehugging wierdos with any herbal solutions ? Andy, I want to apologise to you. I realise I can see you are going through it at the moment and I’ve highjacked your OP to give my ramblings on “there is nothing positive about being negative” bollocks. We are all a bunch of miserable old farts anyway. I hope things heal quickly and that you can get back to a pain free life soon. ....yes. and alcohol helps...

........ now you have to try Malt Whisky, lots of bargains ...............
for some reason my bro imagines me in a wheelchair, and thinks I should fashion my life around his hypothesis , I can't do that. Those guys who died on Ben Hope last week, they were experienced mountaineers, at least they lived their lives, they left their mark. I know folks who died young and those who had personality/lifestyle changes, late in their life, or too early in their life, but I also challenge those who make "assumptions". Just settle down, and decide what you want to do now....................... plenty of time ..............

Trialled this twice last night and again today, I’m up walking unaided but still with massive limp, seems to do some good but won’t know til the onset of next attack as I need to treat it as soon as I get the first bad feeling to see if it prevents me being immobile! Pretty sure I’ll be able get to local for my Friday night pints so despite loosing 2 nights pay, all’s not lost.👍

Hope it continues to work for you.
I wasn't looking to 'mix it' with earlier comments (sorry bassplayer)
I have some knee arthritis which I choose to grit my teeth over and work through, as bassplayer was suggesting (as I read it, and agree).
I merely meant that looking at Andy's plates, his problems are WAY beyond that idea.
Real, serious, physical issues need something more.

Baby oil is good if your young lady is around. It won't help with the pain, but it may reduce some swelling. Just saying Rog Reduce swelling...?😉

Ann takes Glucosamine Chondroitin, and also takes turmeric paste, which tastes pretty disgusting but seems to work.

What’s extreme about those methods? What less extreme methods do you suggest? Nothing is extreme about positive thinking until you think it's a 'cure all ills'. It certainly isn’t. I think that there are different stages in the process too. Sharing the problem with other people is very good in the early stages as there is good advice out there. It’s good to try different things out too. It’s just that some people (present company excepted) do get stuck in a negative spiral. I found this with my previous bouts of depression. You can end up get up getting depressed with depression ! Each time the only way I got out of it was to think differently. Sounds easy, but it wasn’t and it took many weeks of doing that for the cloud to lift. The attitude to physical disabilities and pain make a difference too but I do understand how it is to be in so much pain, you can’t even think straight. A cure for all ills, definitely not, but it helps.

What’s extreme about those methods? What less extreme methods do you suggest? Amitriptyline. I tried that when had awful jaw pain..tried persuading dentists first to pull my teeth out..wasn't teeth but clenching jaw due to stress I think it works more on nerve type pain..daughter also tried it when she had severe back issues. Didn't work as pain relief for me but I slept well..taking magnesium supplements seemed to sort mine out and daughter ended off with surgery.

By the way, I have a 'bad back' - can't really bend to do my shoelaces or put my socks on. Why my back is like this I don't know - 32 years of sitting driving buses? The latest physiotherapist said I just need to do 'self-treatment' - bending and stretching and rolling a hard ball between my back and a wall - which I have been doing, with no improvements. Just old and rusty. Latest X-ray shows there has been a change in my spine, one disc getting squashed/compacted. I wonder if I can get 'sick pension' soon and spend the next 6 years boating instead of bus driving.....

Self employed?
We dont pay sick pay for the first few days either. Stops the naughty days off. However I believe ssp is still paid if applicable.

Might stop the naughty days off but does penalise the genuinely ill.
Thought the Coop would be better than that.

Never used to be. I've only ever had one day off and got paid so never really looked into it.
