IGNORING the reasons why we're now going through 3 weeks earlier than planned, the "notes" indicate generators are not allowed...
I have a feeling I read somewhere that CRT will take them through for you (or up and over?) - is that true does anyone know or do I need to take it home and leave it in the garage - I hardly ever use the ruddy thing anyway... it's just handy as a back up - always been one for having as many forms of redundancy as possible.

Why not jump on a train at Marsden with the generator. Once the train starts moving it's too late for the guard to say anything (and just say you didn't know... blah, blah...)! next station Greenfield. Both stations next to the canal. I bet they'll let you leave the generator at the Kingfisher pub at Greenfield. Or, if you look at Google Maps, there's a generator services between the station and canal, bet they'd take it in for you! Tel. 01457 871116

Does that mean that a CRT person would actually come aboard and search for generators? I find that improbable.
I wonder why it was called Standedge.
It seems to be the last thing you would want to do when going through it.

There is a long millstone Edge facing west on top, Standedge. Popular for rock climbing, 20 - 80ft high. Stayed in "Robin Hood's Cave" on a weekend climbing jaunt many years ago. Re the OP, flame coloured hair is risky too. You will have to go over the top in the van with the genny, which rises from a distant memory on the setup there.

WINDS OF THE PENNINES FRESH AND FREE YOU WERE EVER GOOD FRIENDS TO ME OUT ON THE MOORS FROM MORN TILL EVE HAPPY WITH YOU AND LOATHE TO LEAVE. SO OVER THE HILLS IβLL TAKE MY WAY AND MATE WITH THE WILD AND FREE TILL MY DUST IS FLUNG TO THE WINDS IN MY HILL COUNTRY. βOne of the blackest memories of my early years is of a Christmas time. Work at the mill had been bad for over a month, and we were never more poverty stricken. We had no paraffin for our lamp and barely a barrowful of coal. If a neighbour woman had come into our house on the Christmas Eve, she would have seen a father, mother and two little lads sitting in silence and gloom as they watched a few red cinders die down in the grate.βWhere the lordly moors of Stanedge Shake the meadows from their feet, Where the wind-words heather-scented, Shape themselves to language sweet : There in the weeds of silent mourning, Lines of pain about thy brow, Grey, old-fashioned country hamlet, Sad and ruined standest thou. andyhemingway.wordpress.com/2013/06/23/ammon-wrigley/

I'm sure we had the genny on board, but this was back in 2006 when the boat was towed through.
We walked the dogs over the top as they weren't allowed on board at that time.
Jane's just checked C&RT's Boating through Standedge Tunnel pages ... and there is no mention of generators at all.

I'll bet there's more than one around. We have a Robin Hood's Bed across the valley from us, aka Blackstone Edge, similar but smaller generally than Standedge.

Canβt remember any questions about generators when we went through twice last summer. Worst case scenario is you can hide it under a bed etc.

I think quaysider should put the generator in the shower. Nobody coming aboard his boat will ever find it.

I'm SURE I read it somewhere... can't for the life of me find it now though...
I think I'll just flog the ruddy thing anyway - hardly ever can be bothered to lug it out and use it even when we are in the middle of nowhere. It's too high powered - given its primary use was intended as charging batteries (that have already been bulk charged by the auxiliary alternator) 4 hours running to get them full, is a waste of petrol.
AND flogging it on, will make space for 4 boxes - maybe 6, of wine!
