used to drive a Benford (?) during the early 60's if I remember correctly though that had an almost bomb proof single cylinder Petter.
It was thrashed everywhere without mercy and spent most of the time grossly overloaded

Advanced course includes repeatedly running out of fuel, miss fueling and how to Syphon fuel without being caught

to be fair the MI6 coverage up in the wilds of Yorkshire is a bit thin and patchy so could be duff info I received.
One of my great grandfathers was from Sheffield. Just thought I would mention that.
going back to starting procedures for old engines I really like the old Lister startomatic generators. They are great.
Started up by turning on the lights. Love it.

My mate had a Kelvin J3 on his boat which had to be started on petrol before switching over to diesel Here’s a video of the procedure with a J2....

I nearly bought a narrow boat with a J2 in it years ago. Ganymede.
The engine had a thermo start retrofitted which bypassed the need to start on petrol.
Great engines for continuous operation on fishing boats but a bit of a nuisance on pleasure narrow boats.
Kelvins are very beautiful engines.
My boat at the time had a Russell Newbery DM2 which was a much more practical unit as it had ordinary electric start and a handle for backup.

If I remember well, that video was made so his wife could start the engine too, in case of an emergency. I'd seen that video already a couple of years ago, and enjoyed seeing it again. There was another cwdf member who even was a mod for a while, Graham Oliver, he had a 3 cylinder Kelvin in his boat, very beautiful too, his was a K-series. Peter.

NB Alnwick. An RW Davis "Northwich trader" replica with the imitation rivets.
The K series Kelvin engines are amazing. 22hp per cylinder at 750rpm. That is some serious torque. Much too big for a narrow boat really.
Eta although to be fair its a nice way to display and use a beautiful engine many of which have been scrapped.
