Toothed belts are used on electric skateboards. I have been considering employing a toothed belt for an electric canoe conversion where I want the motor to remain outside the vessel but above the waterline. Like a miniature outboard motor. What the feck has that got to do with anything
Some very attractive lady overtook me on a skateboard today - I'm ashamed to admit I did speed up to keep the view in sight for longer.

The 'massive majority' of boaters are also able to get their boats through 185' wide bridge arches on the Thames without clouting one of the bridge piers. The "massive majority" of marine engineers wouldn't say "Oh, your engine won't start? Best you take it out of the boat then so we can see why it won't start". Why don't you ask Socks if she'll lend you her straitjacket ? Your need appears to be greater than hers at the moment !

I was referring to the skateboard. Slight buzzing would tend to indicate an electric motor. Also was she using her legs ?

She was using her legs in a most satisfactory way.

Probably not an electric board then.

As you were wittering on about 'teeth' on Donkey's alternator belt on some earlier page in this thread, I very much doubt you have even the remotest idea what 'tooth' belts are, or what they're used for. I will try to explain this in very simple language, in the kind of way one does for simple folk. Generally speaking, there are two types of auxilliary drive belts, V belts and serpentine belts. Serpentine belts have tensioners, V belts don't. V belts generally benefit from being re-tensioned after being fitted. Hope this helps. A smattering of factual stuff, adulterated with a lot of ill-informed garbage ! A good example of quite how useless, and pointless, just a little knowledge can be ! The description 'serpentine' is NOT a 'type' of belt, . . it's a term applied to very long poly-v belt, or to a (toothed) timing belt which, because of their completely flat back faces/sides, can operate over plain tensioning rollers working from outside to inside of the belt run to drive multiple ancillaries, or camshafts.

I don't believe anyone would refer to the timing belt as a serpentine belt. The term is specifically used to describe the poly vee auxiliary drive belt.

yes. I understand the meaning of the word and the way the belt operates. However in general parlance when you refer to a serpentine belt on a vehicle engine you will be talking about the auxiliary belt not the timing belt.
The timing belt regardless of its actual configuration will be referred to as the timing belt or cambelt.
The two belts must be distinguished by different names otherwise shitty confusion and fuckups will happen .
eta I suppose you could argue that the timing belt is the only actual serpentine belt on a boat engine where the alternators and water pump are run by manually tensioned vee or poly vee belts. But I still think it would be called "the timing belt" not "the serpentine belt" if you were referring to it requiring replacement for example.
