We went to see the van but didn't buy it, a bit too much corrosion underneath. Then we went to the National Motorcycle Museum, which was pretty impressive. Then we went to the Rainsbrook Valley Railway in Rugby. They only operate about six days a year but today was one of them. Unfortunately all three of the steam locos they had running managed to break down in the space of an hour, leaving two rather quirky diesels. Nice waste of an hour or two though.

Tricky conditions in the estuary this morning for my paddle back in. 2-3ft groundswell, unusual for this time of the year, not forecast. Lowish tide, and dropping, meaning that waves were almost, but not quite breaking in the channel. Strong crosswind came out of nowhere. It took all my energy to keep the kayak from going side on to the swell, which could easily have resulted in a capsize. 35 minute paddle out to beyond the sewer outfall buoy, 55 minutes back.
Work this afternoon, shifted 1 1/2 tons of compost and sand into a barrow, then uphill then into a raised bed I built.
A decent day for exercise.

No carping, thems the rules ... pay a tench un 😁 Rog In the very distant and dim past, when I used to fish in the local parks and canals around Brum, March 14th to June 16th was closed. Do fish mature quicker in closed waters or is it just too expensive to police a clised season?

"To help protect our precious fish populations, from 15 March to 15 June inclusive, the annual close season for coarse fishing (on rivers and streams) reduces disturbances to coarse fish and protects vulnerable stocks during their peak spawning period.15 Mar 2024"
Since I was 16 years old, and went fishing with my oldest brother in North Yorkshire, the close season only applied to rivers and streams and NOT land-locked water (ponds and canals).

Rog I recall the close season covered both rivers and land locked waters. I believe that commercial fisheries pushed for it to be changed, lots of money in fishing lakes. Also remember rivers kept the close season due to migratory fish. Something like that anyway.

That fits with my memory to.
The close season has seen various changes in the intervening years, notably being removed from most stillwaters in 1995 and most canals in 2001. Where it remains, on rivers and some canals and stillwaters, the dates remain the same. The 14 March and 16
June remain significant dates in the coarse fishing calendar.

It's my oldest brother's birthday today, and he's the one that first took me fishing up into North Yorkshire.
Always easy to remember the first day of the fishing season when it's your birthday.
I must admit these days I quite enjoy the sitting without the fishing.
I do tackle up when I meet up with friends, but it's more a social thing these days.

I spent most of my life coarse fishing. I've been happy to move on to fly fishing, sea fishing from my kayak and most especially, fly fishing for bass from my kayak.
