A new species for me on the kayak today. A cod, so rare around these parts that they are known as unicorn fish. Also a lovely ballan wrasse of 3 1/2 pounds. Tomorrow should be fun. A friend with a proper boat is taking me to the Sarn Badrig reef. Around 7 miles from here, out of the range of the kayak. Targets will be bass, black bream and tope. Might get lucky and spot a leatherback turtle.

Back on the Avon today. Had a great time down on the Severn. Hardly any internet or TV/Radio signal down there, so about a week of no news. Spent an hour this morning catching up with the news/gossip.. and surprisingly, nothing really new has occurred. Might try and make it a habit to switch off from the media more often. The Severn down from Gloucester is well worth a visit. Absolutely beautiful.

I'd take a pollack if I caught a sizeable one as this species is reasonably plentiful but around these parts, they are generally small. They like rocky areas, it's mainly sand around here. Others take a different view. I have no issue with folk taking fish for the pot but taking undersized ones isn't on. And then there are fishmonger types. One local chap sells bass fillets @ £15 quid a kilo to local restaurants. I sometimes see him struggling up the steps with bags full of them, ready to fillet. There is a legal maximum of 2 fish per day 42cm minimum. This kind of thing happens in small towns, it's best not to get involved.

Other fish species have minimum sizes but no maximum for numbers taken.

Cruised up to the top end of Congleton today - the UK’s prime glider bits shop has relocated there and I wanted to be the first to visit by canal boat. Which I was. Google maps said it was 1 mile to walk, and ”mostly level” - the latter being bullshit as Congleton is a town built on hills.
The lower Macc is quite pleasant with plenty of moorings and not too many CMers hogging water points, but slightly bland. I still think we made the right decision to take Jeff’s parents on the Caldon. Probably the Macc gets better above the locks, but then you risk getting trapped the wrong side of Bollington etc. Anyway we turned round and are heading back to the T&M to complete the 4C ring (and hoping Audlem gets fixed timeously).

Personally I generally only take a few mackerel each year. Fish murderer! I guess so. Those buying a nice fillet of plaice from the lovely man behind the Morissons fish counter are accessories to fish murder. Those buying a nice steak from Tesco are accessories to cow murder.

There is a different problem on the River which is that people are taking the large fish and selling them to the fishing lakes. One result of this may be that anglers choose to torture the fish in lakes rather than in the River. So in a way it is beneficial. I don't find sport anglers add anything positive to the place at all. I recently saw a twisted up Heron on some discarded line caught in a tree. The bird will have struggled a lot and probably broken all the bones in its wing while still alive.

Had a walk to Newport Pagnell courtesy of one of Dr Beechings closed railway lines. Made a jolly pleasant walk and enjoyed the town. It boasts the oldest iron bridge in the world still carrying full traffic, Tickford Bridge. Built in 1810 by Walkers of Rotherham. Good to see something else good has come out of Rotherham apart from me 😊 Rog

Scholar Green on the Macc to Rode Heath today. Very quiet, we passed 2 boats in all that way and didn’t pass any boats on the lock flights. Which was a shame as all the locks were empty😢 Red bull moorings empty, church Lawton moorings 1 boat.
According to Google maps directions, it is 2.5 miles by road to where we started out, which would take 6 minutes. It’s taken us 6 hours (although that includes a Lidl stop). The joys of canals!

Luggage rack finished and fitted to the Scoopy. Looks really good I think. Only the broken legshield left to fix now, which I will do when the boys are up next week. I've decided to postpone getting the MOT until the V5C has arrived at my fake address in Kent as there seems little point as I can't tax it until it has.
