'Abdul' is now buying with cash he tells me, previously he was going to get mortgages. So he's already told porkies... He seems a decent, open fella but a decade of experience with folk east of here tells me to expect things to be rather different from what you might expect. So you'll be walking down the street to the bank with a few thousand in cash in your pocket (hopefully not forged notes!) and Abdul's mates will be laying in wait somewhere along the way with coshes... Good Luck!

You and ianali will know better than me no doubt, but isn't the Ashby always quite low in summer ? Rog I have moored on the Ashby since 2017. This is the first time though, that Iβve actually cruised it in the summer months. We are usually out exploring the system. So I canβt really say if itβs worse than usual, others tell me it is. What I can say is that we had no problems between Hawksbury and Bedworth, but as soon as you turn onto the Ashby itβs very shallow. Needs dredging now.

First went on the Ashby in summer 2015 and was low then, 2016 spent a lot of time on there and it appeared better, hearing this year its bad.
in the centre you are ok, but certain parts are not good to meet other boats as one of you will get stuck, its like a game of chicken, who can stay closest to the centre.

Well I have received a reply. They said sorry, and are going to send me some water down from the Coventry canal. They also sent an on line dreging form(their spelling not mine) to complete. Happy days π

Happy days π Perhaps this is a joke which has gone over my head but how would you send water from the Coventry canal down to the Ashby canal when both are on the same level?

Maybe the person writing it thinks the stop lock is still there.

Years since I've been there but how is that level usually fed?
Is it back pumped?

Years since I've been there but how is that level usually fed? Is it back pumped? CRT says... The water at Atherstone locks comes from several sources: β’ Most of the water enters the Coventry & Ashby pound through the stop lock at Hawkesbury Junction. Historically, stop locks were used to separate water supplies from different canal companies. Now we use the stop lock and the Sutton Stop Valve to support the Coventry Canal. β’ The feed of water via Hawkesbury comes from the North Oxford Canal, which in turn comes from the River Swift near Rugby. Reservoirs on the South Oxford Summit and Braunston Summit also contribute to the water supply. β’ Griff pumping station takes water from Griff Brook and puts it into the Coventry Canal. β’ Other feeders (small streams) also bring smaller amounts of water into the system before it reaches the top lock. Wem Brook Feeder is the largest.

So the suggestion that they will top the Ashby up from the coventry is in fact accurate.
While they are the same level due to the stop lock no longer being in place the actual feed of water to the Ashby canal does come from the Coventry canal.

Well it could be a technically accurate description if you consider the fact there was originally a stop lock separating the two canals. At the junction.
I assume but don't know for sure that the level on the Ashby canal would have originally been slightly lower than the Coventry. They would probably have had to buy water from the other company in the event of unusually low levels. However the use of the stop lock would have probably taken care of it. Presumably a toll was payable. How sensible.
This is all theoretical but I'm pretty certain there are remains of a stop lock there.

Cool misty moisty morning here, sun is trying to burn off the mist and succeeding slowly. Got to venture upcountry today, glad the car has aircon, back down here tonight. Back home now to a cool 26deg, highest we saw was 36.5deg around Swindon, 35 in Oundle. The boat painter is working early mornings as its just to hot up there otherwise.
