Flipping windy here on the Ashby. At least you got to the Ashby. We were stuck the wrong side of Atherstone locks. Moored at the bottom last night, then went up to look at the damaged lock. They must have spent a day erecting the fencing AND the other fencing at the lock edge. Instead of doing all that crap they could just have refitted the lock gate! Anyway, not a great night’s sleep because we were moored under an oak tree and at 3am it decided to start shedding most of its acorns onto our roof. Blimey, an acorn hitting the roof makes a right scary racket! Faced with reversing back to the winding hole in that wind, which was not looking forward to but managed to avoid hitting any of the moored boats. Now back to Fazeley where we will have to head in the other direction. Heavy rain forecast this afternoon so we are taking the opportunity to visit my mum, who is a bit depressed because she had an appointment with the ophthalmologist yesterday who said her macular degeneration was getting worse and she was going to lose her straight-ahead vision. What with her hearing being pretty bad too, she is struggling to listen to radio / telly and now even to be able to read the subtitles. Not nice!

That sounded like a really silly situation.
Vandals nicking the pins? Are these collars pinned? Maybe they are nutted and the maintenance was not up to standard.
Some sources suggest while trying to refit the gate CRT dropped it in the lock!
This is a bit ridiculous if true.

It must be very frustrating for her, and probably for you also given there is little you can do.

The doctor told her she had the brain of a 40 year old but unfortunately the body of a 97 year old! Afterwards she said to my sister that she wanted to set up a DNR. She said if she can’t look at nature, she would rather not be alive (she has a nice garden full of bird feeders, and hence birds).

I have seen the before and after photos (Before and afternoon trying to refit the gate). It is now submerged with just the balance beam sticking out.

Jane's Mum suffered macular degeneration ... truly frustrating and unpleasant. Audio books were a great help to her until dementia took her ability to even listen to a story. Perhaps your Mum Telemachus may enjoy audio books ? Rog

Perhaps your Mum Telemachus may enjoy audio books ? Rog It’s certainly something to consider, along with a much bigger telly. But her hearing is very poor too so I’m not sure whether it would work. I’ll consider some big over-ear headphones. With Audible you can slow the speech down without affecting the pitch, that might help her too. She doesn’t seem to read a lot of books (ever, not just recently with her bad eyesight) but there is always a time to start!

They are amazing. It may well be worth asking your mums dr to get an appointment at the nhs hearing centre. Don't bother with boots or specsavers, their aids are bloody rubbish.
