Sorry to hear about your mum. It must be very frustrating for her, and probably for you also given there is little you can do. Thanks, yes. She is 97 and has had a pretty good innings. The doctor told her she had the brain of a 40 year old but unfortunately the body of a 97 year old! Afterwards she said to my sister that she wanted to set up a DNR. She said if she can’t look at nature, she would rather not be alive (she has a nice garden full of bird feeders, and hence birds). Bless her..how awful not to be able to enjoy seeing the birds in the garden. With restrictions ref Corona its very tough for the elderly. I heard of one 94 year old whose family have not visited her since January..she has leukaemia and the relatives simply leave food outside her door... Its tragic.

Jane's Mum suffered macular degeneration ... truly frustrating and unpleasant. Audio books were a great help to her until dementia took her ability to even listen to a story. Perhaps your Mum Telemachus may enjoy audio books ? Rog It’s certainly something to consider, along with a much bigger telly. But her hearing is very poor too so I’m not sure whether it would work. I’ll consider some big over-ear headphones. With Audible you can slow the speech down without affecting the pitch, that might help her too. She doesn’t seem to read a lot of books (ever, not just recently with her bad eyesight) but there is always a time to start! I guess its now a case of researching what there is for her. Technology has moved on and there must be something to help.

Looking back to when my mum died in April, I now see it as a blessing. Bonkers not allowing visits to such people.

They are amazing. It may well be worth asking your mums dr to get an appointment at the nhs hearing centre. Don't bother with boots or specsavers, their aids are bloody rubbish. She does have hearing aids. Not sure when they were last updated though. She is ok with face to face conversation - an element of lip reading probably, but really struggles on the phone. This despite me getting her a phone with the hearing aid loop thing and another one specifically for deaf people with a very loud volume boost mode

Anyway, following the visit yesterday I’ve ordered her some magnifying goggle things. She had various magnifying glass things but all had to be hand held, and her arm/hand would get tired fairly quickly. Also agreed to get her a new and much larger telly. I’m going to get her a Samsung with built in Alexa so she can voice-control it. I did suggest audiobooks but I got the kind of “one new thing at a time” reaction.

I am reminded of Tennyson's words when reading of such stoicism.
Though much is taken, much abides, and though we are not now that strength which in old days moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are, one equal temper of heroic hearts made weak by time and fate, but strong in will, to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Ref Macular Degeneration, and deafness. Chris suffers from both of these conditions as well as her other woes. I recently uptated to a 32 inch Toshiba TV so the sub titles are bigger and so far that seems to be a great help and for the MD I bought an electrical gadget that is a magnifier that sits on the page and goes from 2X to 32X in increments and it is dandy, USB charging, and all the bells and whistles. Chris is waiting for her hearing aids to rock up, the price was an eye watering £1800 but as it's for Chris's comfort it's a small price. I have just got to get used to not muttering under my breath now cos there is nothing wrong with her right hand. Good luck with your mum Telemachus. Phil

Phil Did you try the NHS for hearing aids or are those better than NHS would supply? I got some via a "free test" at the chemist, guaranteed money back in a month if not happy. They worked but I returned them then went via the nhs. The service was immeasurably better, testing and fitting far more thorough. The aids were free, replacement batteries and tubes and buds free too, I just order via the net. I've got a mate who got more complex aids via the NHS too.
