Hi. My boat is due a service b4 we go out next time but as we will be going out for a few mths in one go I thought I would stock up on a few basics. The engine is a Nannie (Kubota) 4.200HE and the previous owner (who had it built) used Nannie filters ( 2 fuel 1 oil) and Morris Servol Performance 15/40 oil. From the comprehensive details he left us money was no object for him and, whilst I don't want to cause problems I am sure there is equally good stuff out there which is cheaper. For example a Nannie oil filter is £18+ but an Alco is about £8. Can I save money and keep quality? Any advice gratefully accepted.

Crikey ... I thought Beta filters were expensive at about ten or twelve quid !
@gazza probably the man to advise on quality.
I used to use Fram equivalents on the old Beta engine without problem.
Gazza will be working, but he'll be along when he can.

Our Bukh filters are Made in Morocco. Are they any good? Well, I suppose you'd have to pop into that factory in Morocco to see the working conditions and cleanliness to judge for yourself. We've had a Mahle filter on, it's two times the size of the Bukh filter, and apparently Made in Austria (?) - anyway, Mahle have a good reputation.
We use Morris oil 10-40 for engine, straight 30 for gearbox. Are Morris oils any good? Who can say!
Research is always needed into this complicated subject.
Filters Made in India just have bits of cardboard inside them - avoid at all costs.

Mann filters are the Shizzel www.ebay.co.uk/p/W-920-80-Mann-Hummel-Oil-Filter/1025349074Some other options. Replacement oil filters for NANNI-DIESEL 970603003: Baldwin B229 Donaldson P550318 Fleetguard LF3376 LUBER-FINER PH253 Use a good 15/40 such as Exol www.lubetechshop.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=22_32&products_id=62Morris stuff is great, but no real advantage over the above. Don't pay for labels or perceived extra protection where there is none.

Filters Made in India just have bits of cardboard inside them - avoid at all costs. I can! You've had loads of advice on this subject. You ought to get yourself a permanent marker and write 'This is a genuine Bukh product' on the side of a good OE spec filter. It will have the same effect and perform exactly the same (and better in some cases) as the manufacturer marked and boxed item. As for oil, plenty of crap talked about that too. Spec is everything - these days there isn't too much rubbish oil about tbh. Don't go pouring 20/50 Motorway through your prize engine (although if you've got a leaky smokey old worn out lump there is a good case for using the cheapest brown and slippery you can!) and you won't go far wrong. A list of oils I use with total confidence. Comma Exol Shell Motul Halfords (Comma in a relabeled can) Rye Oils The list is endless to be honest, oil (particularly automotive oil) is generally a triumph of advertising over substance anyway.

I use AD 20/50 mineral oil, it's about £11 for 4.5 litres. I don't know how it would compare to Golden Film or similar priced oil but the fact that it's cheap means I change the oil far more often than I would if I was paying £25+ for it.
