You can use Keelblack to overcoat the other stuff, both John and I have used it, I am very happy with the results, and I have docked and recoated it, the previous keelblack was in good condition so I have no complaints Ross So are the problems I've been reading about more down to preparation than the Keelblack

Hull only 33ft so there may be enough in the 10ltrs (£90ish)to do 4 coats below the waterline.

When I drydock next I will be interested to see how the Keelblack has held up on Sabina. The preparation was not of the best and I was not that confident in the reliability of the application. I was not too worried as mostly it was just to protect the existing Interzone coating (at that time 12 years old) and my excuse was that I had been poorly

I used SML Ballastic Black. SML state it can be put over other bitumen coatings: "Ballastic Black Premium Hull Blacking is a waterproof, high build bitumen coating that is ideal for use below the waterline as a hull blacking on narrowboats, canal boats and for vessels on the inland waterways. Bitumen products such as Ballastic Black provide an extremely flexible coating it can be applied on to bare steel or over existing bitumen based coatings (like Intertuf 16, Comastic and Rylards Rytex)" The only issue I found was it dries to a dark grey matt (doesn't bother me but I know some like black and shiny) I did look at Keelblack but found more bad reviews than good. As it was my first go at blacking decided to avoid it Thanks. Have made a note. Yes, I have read bad reviews of Keelblack. Am waiting for an e-mail reply from Keelblack. I use response time as a judgement, also. I may well write to SML.

I've used Fertan and can say it's complete bollocks. Others will disagree. But I have seen the (no) results for myself, and will not be buying Fertan again. Red oxide slapped on is far better.

Where is Jim's Fertan going to be used?

I don't like Fertan either .... was very unimpressed with the results Since Harry Wheatcroft stopped producing his excellent product (20 years ago) the only chemical rust treatment I have used that seems to work is www.toolstation.com/rust-converter/p43408

Booked into Hebden Bridge dry dock 29th April. "less Lesbians = more sex for the blokes = less drug use. The answer is simple, Hebden Bridge needs a Lesbo cull."

Yes greenman I took it back to bare metal, I didn't have to, just thought a better job if I did. I then put Fertan on the bare metal to convert any rust I missed. I'm not stripping it all back this time, just the scrapes and bare patches, then applying keelblack. I will post pics. naughtyfox if you tried harder you could say something nice about Hebden and the lesbians. After all you have a lot in common, fiddling with ladies bits for a start!

Actually I rather like Hebden Bridge, although the fact that the only food shop is the Co-Op is a bit dreary. I can't, in all honesty, say I have ever been attacked by Lesbians in Hebden Bridge, so I suppose they aren't all bad.

Nowt wrong with that for a start, a fine Rochdalian Idea. There is loads of fine fodder to be had around Hebden, or must sleeping moths not be woken.

Booked into Hebden Bridge dry dock 29th April. Ordering Keelblack and Fertan next week. And a Rotoblaster for cleaning off any carp. As far as I can see, the keelblack has stayed on fine, except for scuffs and ice damage from icebreaking one day. Yes Jim, thats because we followed the instructions on how to apply it! John my neighbour did the same and his has stayed on as well, I really do despair that people use the stuff and then drop the boat in the water a few hours later, and wonder why its gone wrong Keel black in my experience, I've now used it twice on the same boat, the drying times are longer than expected. You must wait till the surface is hard, which in a damp dry dock will be several days minimum. Working on the hard will allow far more air flow around the boat. As a product, I will be using it again, in 3 years time.

It was hot and dry in our dry dock!! 20 odd degrees and it was nearly dry on contact with the steel, so no issues at at all, I will be using it again as well second time I have used it to
