Can you get a bulb with higher wattage that fits?
Also, when you have nearly 8v across the bulbs, what is the voltage across the battery terminals?

I'm not sure about the bulb but the headlight casing has stamped on it "max 35w/35w". I didn't check across the battery terminals at higher revs but at lower revs the voltage was the same at the battery as at the bulb connectors.

The bottom line seems to be too much output from the alternator for the load. Since you canβt really do anything about the alternator output, the alternative is to increase the load. Is the tail light OK? Is the battery electrolyte OK?

I have been staying out of this so far as I have been agreeing with the answers but there are a couple of things that might be worth checking.
What is the condition of the battery terminals..... a resistive joint there could stop the battery from acting as the voltage regulator
Do the negative feeds for the bike terminate at the battery terminal or do they terminate at a common earthing point ? If a common point check that they are clean and tight as well.
I'm not familiar with your bike but I remember coming across that kind of thing before when I was a committed biker and most were due to bad connections.
(and or a dodgy battery)

Yes all other lights are OK, apart from the little bulbs in the speedo and rev counter. Rear light bulb is 2 years old, still going strong. Battery renewed 2 years ago, electrolyte level regularly checked and topped up.

Is there a point in the system where you might fit a voltage regulator? Or, if only front bulb blowing, on the +ve feed to it?
