Anyone got a ballpark figure of how much it would be likely to cost to have my roof taken back to bare metal and painted by a professional boat painter?
Boat is a 42' trad.

"Boat" and "roof" are non-compatible terms.
Once we get past this obvious issue it may be possible to discuss costs.
42ft boat so that's a 33ft cabin top? 6ft wide so 10x1.8 = 18m² (yes I am a maths genius).
So if someone can do a per metre quote it should be easy. Nitromors.

I reckon £100/sqm but I know nothing about it.
Even £2k seems a ridiculous amount of money to spend on getting the top of the boat painted.

Like any paint job it's the prep that takes the time. Nitromors is complete crap now the eu banned them from putting methylene chloride in it and although I can get Paramose which still has it, it would need more than just stripping to get it back to bright metal.

Do it yourself, save yourself £1800.00? You won't get a professional finish but if you don't rush it it should be more than half decent. Half decent good enough for the roof but maybe not the cabin sides?

I doubt paint stripper would be used. More likely power sanding plus a grinding disc for any areas of rust. Does it have non-slip (ie sandy) paint on it? I suppose that would make it harder to remove and to replace, but not massively so. Get a random orbital sander from Screwfix (£35 or so) and some decent sanding discs, you could have it back to bare metal in a day.

I spent a few hours with chisels scraping away at our roof when we took our boat on its first journey in June 2014. It came out a bit 'blotchy' with lower and higher patches. The first paint I put on was some kind of filler paint, then undercoat, and then 3 topcoats - with the last we sprinkled sand into the wet paint. Very pleased with the result. Painted again July 2016 whilst we were in dry dock, a good opportunity, and I painted it again last August. Sand still coming through and giving grip. Rylard's Light Battleship Grey.

So you were ‘very pleased with the result’ ... You stated you've painted your roof 3 times in 5 years, that sounds a great recommendation for your way of working Lol.😂

We did the 3 topcoats in June 2014, the 4th in dry dock July 2016, and the 5th last August. The 4th and 5th were really just to make it all look nice again - black bits from the stove, bird poo, general weathering - washing it with cream cleaner will make it look better, but I had time and the inclination to give it a fresh look. Looks OK to me:

I did mine 3 years ago with non slip floor paint. Big mistake. Although it held on OK every time I washed it a horrible grey residue ran down the sides which was a swine to clean off.
Did a full repaint last summer. The roof: flattened the floor paint with a sander, grinder for odd areas of rust then rust killer, primer and undercoat. I used Paintmaster gloss for the top coat with sanded rectangles. Looks perfect a year on, but the sanded bits are a real bugger to clean.
