When I measure my solar cables the positive and negative currents differ slightly. They difference being maybe 3 or 4%. Is this usual? If it is why does it differ? Cheers, Ian.

I would blame the solar faeries, often created when solar flares are observed.

Negative voles aren't as up to the job as positive voles, they have no get up and go, preferring to just lounge about.

The current in positive and negative cables is identical. The difference you are seeing arises from measurement error. Well I suppose there is a slight possibility that the negative is somehow connected to the hull at the panels and some of the negative current is passing via the hull, but seems unlikely.

I reckon Jim has it right

Measured using a mastech clamp. Now hereβs a question. I think I may know the answer having just measured again. Does the direction that you hold the clamp in affect the reading?

clamp meters are notoriously inaccurate. frankly I'm surprised that you get a correlation within 4%.

perhaps the peeps who manufacture cables should introduce some sheathing with fluffy colours - pink and grey always look nice together ..... that's my feminine side coming out
