Thanks all for the good wishes for my mum. She is a little better and she was determined to vote (Liberal) today so we managed to get her into the car (with difficulty) and took her round to the polling station, where it had been arranged that a teller would come out to the car with her ballot paper. She then ate a reasonable lunch and spent a short while sunning herself in the garden. But she does get tired extremely quickly and is very unsteady on here feet. But she still has white blood cells in her urine (I got some sticks from Amazon) plus a little blood, indicating that the UTI is still not fully cleared up Has she finished her course of antibiotics? If so when? If the answer to the first is yes and the answer to the latter is “a couple of days ago it may be worth getting her urine tested again to make sure the antibiotics cleared everything. If they didn’t the doctor can prescribe further antibiotics based on the new test which should make it clear which ones will work. Yes, antibiotics finished mid-day today. 2 days ago the stick test was still showing a bit of leukocytes and blood, today it is clear except for a tiny bit of blood which may be her normal. So it’s clear for the time being. It is a fine line between over and under testing. Overtesting can lead to obsession, which is bad! Anyway we’ll repeat the test in a few days (before we go to Berlin on Sat) to be sure.

It’s not been the best of times. I enjoy the happy moments and roll with the worst. Stay positive.

I am finding it a bit depressing, can’t see her lasting too much longer in her own home even with carers coming in 3 times a day. I need to remember that just a month ago she was going to Waitrose on her mobility scooter and doing all her own shopping etc, with just a home help once a week. Still hoping she will get back to that place.

Yesterday she told me she had drunk so much she was exhausted by it. That amounted to 2 cups of water between breakfast and dinner!

All the best to your mother. My mum has been suffering similarly the last couple of years. It’s not been the best of times. I enjoy the happy moments and roll with the worst. Stay positive. Thanks. My mum had a stroke two years ago. Recovered well and was ok to return home. Lives alone, my dad passed some years ago. All was well for a few months then a UTI. Back in hospital, returned home and we went down the route of carers, eventually tried full time live in care workers. Then another UTI. This time mum came out worse. My two brothers and I took turns having mum living with each of us. Her mind started to deteriorate as well and to be honest it all became a nightmare. I feel some shame in admitting we ended up finding a home that we hoped would suit the whole situation. Mum now resides in a care home. It’s been a revelation. Mum socialises more now than when she often sat home on her own. Has twenty four hour care when needed. It has changed my views on care homes massively, it is a good place for her. All in all mum is in a far happier state of mind. Both myself and lots of family visit mum often. I jump trains back to see her in north Warwickshire. It all works well. Oddly knowing this is all for the best, I still feel guilt that I don’t have her with me full time. Anyway, waffling aside, I’ve written this in the hope, that should you ever need to go this route, you can know that a happy outcome is possible.

Yes I do feel that she is fairly close to needing a care home. That said, we have been weaning her off our help and she is managing to wash and put herself to bed, get up in the night for a wee in the commode, get up in the morning and wash and dress herself all pretty much without assistance. But it looks a very fragile process and I’m not sure how long she will be able to do it. She has a lot of friends around her down here, we live 465 miles away so I don’t think taking here away to Aberdeen to have her live with us is a viable option. House not well suited either. She is a sociable animal and I’m sure that if and when she does end up in a care home, she will be the life and soul of the party!

Nothing to add, or words of wisdom to offer ...
but as others have eloquently said, it's tough and decisions don't always come easily.
Be kind to yourselves as well.
Hope your Mum's recovery continues.
