I'm in the process of fitting two alternators, I'm just wondering if it matters which way they spin. Yes, on the front of most alternators is a fan to keep the alternator cool and spin it the wrong way and there is a distinct chance the alternator will overheat. Some even have an arrow indicating direction of rotating.

These haven't got arrows on them.

These haven't got arrows on them. Basically it doesn't matter but you might have to turn the fan around so it cools efficiently. The diodes in the rectifier still convert the AC peaks and troughs into DC. Doesn't matter which way the AC signal comes in.

most car engines turn clockwise as you look at them from the front so most car alternators do the same which way does your engine turn? if its clockwise chances are good alternator will be ok

So a matter of looking at the fans

The pulley that drives the alternators spins clockwise as you look at it. If I get chance I'll post some photos tmw.

Yes its all about the fan. Some fans are bidirectional, some are handed and don't work as well if spun the wrong way. The bidirectional ones just have fan blades sticking straight out.

Thanks for all the advice, so the fans on my alternators are handed and made to run clockwise as you look from the pulley. As they are internal fans I don't think I'm going to be able to change them. I can mount them this way, it's just a more akward job and won't look as neat. Oh well.
