Do keep up, on the back row. Did you get a blister on your finger and couldn't read all the posts? Bell Bottoms has told us he has a boat and where it is moored and why it's not in the avatar. You presumed the one in the avatar was his, for which nobody blames you, he has now taken it out of his avatar. All this is too much for a simple fox. Sometimes I wish I rode to hounds. He/his? She/hers, innit! I know, I had a quick scan of the thread to see if there was a definitive post about it, no joy, did I miss it?

Hi, Yes you are correct, I'm all woman attempting to live an off grid lifestyle and enjoying every minute of it. If its not a personal question - what sort of toilet have you got on the boat?

Don't get me started on "off grid"!
Is your boat made of hand-woven raffia?
If it is welded steel then I'm guessing coal-fired power stations provided the electricity for the welder.
'Off grid' - how do you send messages to Thunderboat?
Do you use batteries on your boat? They are made of lead, acid and plastic, and that all needs to come from somewhere.
Where does your rubbish go? A lorry collects it? Driven by fossil fuels from Saudi Arabia? And then to 'landfill' - such a nice term, don't you think?
When you go to the toilet in a pub and flush, that water has been pumped with electric pumps by the very 'grid' you deplore.
I admire people who try to use less, unnecessary energy, don't get me wrong. I believe in efficiency - not like farmers who possess tractors bought with EU funding and leave them standing and rusting.
For starters the UK should adopt the same system as in Scandinavia - deposits on plastic and glass bottles, and cans, and machines into which they can be shredded and crushed or used again.
There is a MOUNTAIN in Cannock (go and look!) which is all of our RUBBISH! It is huge!

I try my utmost to use supermarkets, pubs and other public buildings if at all possible to minimise my need to empty the tank. Aha! Using other peoples' electricity for free! And their water! Very 'off grid'. I expect you like the lights on in the bogs too! What will happen when you have toothache... will you do a Tom Hanks and bash your rotten tooth out with a skating boot? (have you watched Castaway?). Or pop along to a dentist whose outfit is positively enriched with 'grid' apparatus? Pethaps he will use a hand drill? I think not.

ps - don't mind me. We take the piss here, but our main aim is the comfort & welfare of fellow boaters.
It does seem that many boaters have their minds in the right place, and want to get away from the rat race ( not to mention the Scungers of Newbury, and the Chavs of Abingdon!) and appreciate the calm and natural elements of the waterways. Great for zoologists and botanists.

I wonder if there are any floating dentists about. Might be an interesting business model.

Hi, I have a pump out which is not very much off grid but it does keep me attached to society when I have to go and have it emptied. I try my utmost to use supermarkets, pubs and other public buildings if at all possible to minimise my need to empty the tank. It really is amazing how pump-out toilet owners(including ourselves) find toilets.I never knew there were so many til' we got our boat 15 yrs ago.Supermarkets, museums,MaccyDees, places like Debenhams etc, coffee stops, pubs & shopping malls.π

Speaking of vessel urinals I saw something I had never seen before last week. On the Thames at reading there is a big old Humber lighter barge used as offices. I was gliding past in the floating electric beer drinking platform when a gentleman appeared in the wheelhouse then vanished into a private cubicle followed by a hull skin fitting discharging a yellow liquid into the river for a few seconds. I think I had seen my first blatant on board urinal. And yes it was blatant as the hull skin fitting was about 5ft above the waterline and no it did not splash me

Jeff and I do piddles in the sink to avoid filling the tank with βmostly waterβ. Jeff also sometimes piddles off the back of the boat whilst driving. Try doing that if you are a girlie!
