The cruise ship's owner, MSC Cruises, said the ship, the MSC Opera, was about to dock at a passenger terminal in Venice when it had a mechanical problem.
Two towboats guiding the cruise ship into Venice tried to stop the massive cruise ship, but they were unable to prevent it from ramming into the river boat.

Watched it on the new tonight as well, the river boat was a bit of a mess after the bow hit the jetty, I now know why it stopped moving when it was hit!

I see they threw in the old "mechanical malfunction" Huh fact of the matter was they had too much way on her, no reason to even be in gear as she had 2 tugs in attendance plus all vessels of that size have mahoosive bow and stern thruster at least a couple at each end of the boat probably about 5m diameter. These boats are capable of moving in sideways easily. Someone on the bridge was just a bit too gung ho simple Phil

I don't think anyone was hurt which is always good especially when those big ships are involved but must have been awful shock to anyone on the smaller boat.

Conclusive proof that bowthrusters are ineffective...

Very poor communication by MSC, it was hours before they were told what was going on. The whole cruise itinerary will have to be changed but again they don't know the details yet.

Conclusive proof that bowthrusters are ineffective... Well they are effective when you watch boats of this size docking, with no fore or aft movement they just inch in sideways to gently kiss the fenders on the quayhead, the fenders are made from huge bundles of car/truck tyres chained to form a sausage shape. I reckon the smaller boat was a continuous moorer and the captain of the large bout had just had enough of them hogging the water point.

Ref cruise itineraries often it is a while as they have to know exactly when leaving and which docks can accommodate them. Ive been on ships where they've had to reverse the whole itinerary for one lapsed day...you could have worse places to be an extra 24 hours....I like Venice, there is a very interesting shop there...
