My son joined the ship in Venice yesterday, departure is delayed by at least 24 hours while they fix whatever the mechanical malfunction was. Very poor communication by MSC, it was hours before they were told what was going on. The whole cruise itinerary will have to be changed but again they don't know the details yet. Ref cruise itineraries often it is a while as they have to know exactly when leaving and which docks can accommodate them. Ive been on ships where they've had to reverse the whole itinerary for one lapsed day...you could have worse places to be an extra 24 hours....I like Venice, there is a very interesting shop there... Latest is that they are going no-where for at least 2 days, possibly not at all. They are basically on a floating hotel in Venice. All monies are to be fully refunded, all food and drink free, all shows etc going on. As you say Patty, could be worse places to be.

Magnetic docks are a hazard. MSC ? Manchester Ship Canal ? Whats it doing in Italy?

Why didn't they request tug assistance?
I'm wondering if this and other recent minor cruise liner incidents are just a publicity stunt. Deliberate actions resulting in minor casualties but major publicity.
Advertising works in devious ways. The initial story might be a negative one but it imprints the company name and the idea is that this sort of thing won't happen again.
It seems very scammy.

Very big ships visiting ports not designed for vessels of this size, added to the probability the vessels bridge officers & master under estimated the vessels windage vs power & capability of the vessels thrusters OR the vessel suffered a 'power outage' / mechanical failure which reduced the vessels thruster capability. Either way it will be interesting to read the full report once its released.
