Vinyl will be a lot cheaper and easier. Paint will look more aesthetically pleasing if done well.

As the boat is being repainted next year we decided on vinyl, cheap (£30-40) and easy to do. Took us 7 years to get the name on it, only done because EA require it and the number plate in the window suffices for the canal lot. After repaint I may well do vinyl again, certainly for the reg number, haven't decided on whether to use vinyl or paint for the name. However I suspect it will be vinyl.

We used vinyl for the Amber Rose Too. 10 years on it looks as good as the day we applied it. Whereas many boats I know had paint which faded in that time so for me it's no brainer. The full name on a banner background plus the reg number in matching font and colour cost £100-00,for both sides. Of course it would cost a bit more today but we did have a long name. The name etc is fully customised, made to fit the available space... easy to do. Phil

Decided after 3 years to rename me boat. I just want a 6 letter one word. Any thoughts/recommendations on either method? Ta Vinyl decals on wood boards. That way you can put a different name on other side when you moor on DE controlled moorings. My alternative boat name is "M.Y. NIGHTMARE". Throws them off the scent. Eta mine are actually hand written in permanent marker but vinyl self adhesive custom thing jobs would work.

Vinyl tends to be too perfectly precise and hence obviously vinyl. Practical, cheap, but if you have any pride in your boat’s appearance, undesirable.

Our boat name & pictures (vinyl/plastic) were made in Ylivieska. Not many boaters can say that. Still looking good after 4 years.
