Having dabbled in teaching for 3 years (not proper teaching; TEFL) I have some sympathy for a teacher's lot. Having worked in finance prior to that, management role, and comparing the 2:
In the finance role I was expected to work additional hours, beyond what I was paid for. This tended to be at certain times, month end, year end. If you spent more of your time at work doing your job rather than 'networking' there wasn't a need to work late or take work home every day. Although there were tricky decisions to be made, which was stressful, your results came about mostly in line with your ability.
Whilst teaching there was an expectation for your students to achieve certain levels of test results. This was expected regardless of the willingness of students to learn. One of the core skills required in teaching is to inspire those unwilling to learn. Some students are beyond this, however hard the teacher works, it's the teacher that's judged for this. They are judged for something that can be almost entirely outside their control. However hard the teacher tries, however talented he and she is, he or she is still deemed a failure.
I was paid around twice what an established teacher earns when I was in the finance job. Overall, the finance job was easier, with less stress. I was rarely if ever deemed a failure in my finance job but when I taught, the possibility of this was always hanging over me, and I worked bloody hard.

My daughter is a teacher..her role extends far beyond that of teaching and seems to be moving into social work category. She's had horrendous few years with the death of a student(cancer) and other awful stuff to deal with. Also parents seem to attribute blame if their kids who don't bother to work don't get the grades... I was a nurse..our job ..long hours over and above and quite often stayed outside shifts to get work done. All these jobs that are people focused are hard work and emotionally draining.. I wouldn't want to teach..seeing how its affected daughter at times but then I don't think Id want to nurse in the current environment.
However this thread is about a couple who are objecting to Bank holidays being altered for the good of a particular group of people who gave their all for their country.. If they are getting wed on the Sunday shouldn't affect their plans..people don't have to get trashed to endure enjoy weddings..or maybe they do..Tough..on a positive if they cannot down the booze it'll work out cheaper.

compared with what exactly? -working down a coal mine in China -working down a lead mine in Siberia -dustbin lorry driver -toilet cleaner at Luton airport -cotton picking in Louisiana -Bearded Lady at Jim Riley's Circus Foxxy lies (he is right wing after all) You are welcome to the last job, just give up on the chin and lip depilation for a couple of weeks. It's not hard work, sitting on a stool combing your beard.

How do you know I don't already have a beard? It's hard work keeping the Harold Shipman persona going...

Oyyyyy, stop knocking teachers! I was in school by 8am,had a quick drink at morning break, worked through my 40 minute lunch break-which was often shorter waiting for the dinner lady to arrive from an infant(earlier lunch) class.Meetings before & after school,marking/lesson planning/resource making at home each evening.Weekends doing the same.Parts of holidays in school physically moving classrooms, making the room ready etc I spent quite a few years in year 6-SATs year which was very demanding as you needed to get 'on the cusp' kiddiewinks working at a higher level.I enjoyed that as I was able to convince loads of pupils that they could do it ! Teaching is NOT a 9 to 3.30 job ! It didn't cross my mind to knock teachers (bar for the tongue in cheek training day comment π) it was more the fact they are moaning that it will prevent their so called friends from attending a wedding on a Sunday - it is perfectly possible to go and not have to get absolutely ruined! That or get married ona Saturday like thousands of other folks do! Agreed, and kind of my point. Trina jumped in to defend teachers before they were being knocked, after all the planned wedding was on a weekend. I have no doubt this is a sensitive subject for Trina, but I don't thing in the first few posts any serious 'knocking' was going on. Anyway ... back to the subject ... all these lengthy future plans involving huge expense do make me smile. I know couples where the planning lasted longer than the marriage. I always believe that the effort should be directed at the marriage rather than the wedding Rog

It would be interesting to hear what thay actually believe has ruined their wedding.
Sounds like children of the self entitled generation to me.

The title of this thread could also apply to Sebastian Vettelβs performance in Canada today!, πππ I'm s lewis/verstappen fan, ut I think it was a little harsh and ruined the end of the race.
