This is all beginning to whiff of Marples and Beeching - take the money and run. I’m hoping it will get taken over by someone else who will run it more like a trust and get the public involved more in volunteering at ALL levels and roles. I’m sure there are some very experienced retired marketing experts out there for example! The lengthsman role could be achieved by providing the right people with a free mooring and some basic training. Many boaters could do basic lock maintence when they spot a problem. We can all cut the grass next to where we moor up. etc Our waterways need hands on effort...and I don’t mean on a keyboard like this... I agree. Just how is CRT allowed to flog off the nation's assets, by the way? Wasn't there something about a Stuart Mills lining his pockets with the cash generated? Doesn't the Government have some kind of audits commissioners to investigate unwarranted pilfering?

The danger of course is that elf and safety could be used as an excuse to shut down parts of the system....all under the guise of not having enough budget of course! It would be interesting to hear NigelMoore comment on this You do like to click your fingers and have him obey your every beck and call, don't you Nothing personal, Nige, I just feel you're entitled to a rest now and then, a puff on your pipe in your slippers and morning gown.

Hope you're fully recovered very speedily.
So frustrating when this kind of thing happens through no fault of your own.

Im sorry to hear about your fall.. I hope your back gets better soon.. Document, take pictures and send fact based complaint is what I would do..if u can get medical report all good. Id also raise the issue If it was kid? pregnant woman or elderly the scenario could have ended far worse. They are advertising that the canals/towpaths are for all to enjoy whilst failing to maintain in a safe way. I doubt it'll do much good but with me I like sending the occasional letter highlighting issues.. Sometimes it works..but only after lots of follow ups. I'm just about to take on another company whose behaved in a plonkerish way.. I go as far as the point where it'll cost me then with draw.

No personal offence taken, the consideration for my peaceful enjoyment of an aromatic pipe of an evening (or morning, or any time inbetween) is in fact greatly appreciated. Then too, I cannot see my willingness to answer questions from anybody, whether here or elsewhere, as a Pavlovian obedience to snapped fingers; if there is what I consider a genuine question to which I have an answer, I am happy to provide it – so long, of course, as it does not interfere with my pipe and slippers routine.

Cruising across slapton yesterday. A couple of new bottom gates on two of the locks, but the top gates almost falling apart. No chance of seeing the towpaths, as the grass and reeds are 4ft plus high. Stepped off the boat at slapton lock landing and fell into a hole up to my groin. Twisted ankle and fucked back thanks to that. Couldn't see the hole owing to it being hidden by 2ft of grass. Horton lock is crumbling into the chamber, with chunks of brickwork missing. Replacing lengthsmen with office based digital marketing staff is beginning to have an effect on the state of the system. CRT income since 2012 will this year total one point three billion quid, not much of it seems to have gone into maintenance. Horton lock Sink hole at slapton. I do hope that you will reprt the sink hole to CRT. The next person to fall in it could be seriously hurt, or worse. It would seem that CRT do not know that it is there.

Only just read this Steve, how are you feeling today? 5 years ago when we last went to Liverpool,we had a bridge system where I'd swing in to the side for Paul to jump off.I'd then go through the bridge & then swing back to the side for P to get back on.At one bridge,a boat suddenly appeared so I shouted to P to keep the bridge open.I jumped off to hold the boat, foot into deep hole, dramatic mid air turn, flat on a**e,twisted ankle...but I kept hold of the boat !P wondered where I'd gone 😄.Ended up with a twisted ankle, verrrrry bruised sore a**e & a painful shoulder.Nobody's fault but it just shows how easy accidents can happen.P was just impressed I'd kept hold of the rope 😄😄😄

Ankle ballooned and back stiff. Dented ego from having to be lifted out. I've brought this issue of long grass hiding dangers at locks etc to CRT so many times, and am a bit shocked that I fell into my own warnings lol. A pensioner or child could have fared a lot worse, which bothers me more. Someone is going to check for me tomorrow, see if CRT has actioned a repair. Thanks for asking x

Well here's hoping CRT act on this one before another person is injured. Hope the ankle swelling reduces and the back improves....

But volunteers would have to be trained in writing a 10 page risk assessment before going anywhere near paddle gear with a greasy finger. That might be the kind of world you want to live in, but not everyone does. It’s about time we started taking more responsibility for our own actions instead of relying on a nanny state to check our every move.

Darwin will weed out the dross.

Well, having got to hemel hempstead, I have ended up upsetting CRT again by tweeting this to customer service, @crtcontactus . The locks and canal area from Tring to hemel hempstead have degraded enormously over the last 12 months. Do you actually have a maintenance regime for this area, or are you just performing palliative care?

Do you actually have a maintenance regime for this area, or are you just performing palliative care? Slightly surprised you got through Dudswell Lock without the gate completely collapsing. I see they are finally getting around to doing something about Fisheries Lock - maybe next time I go through I'll not have to wait for a bystander to help...
