Thanks Kris - all v helpful, think I'm swaying for sure - everyone I have spoken to that has one (not many tho) - do say they would never go back. It is the case that people who have used compost loos like them and people who have never used them tend to be anti.

My bro says he knows someone pouring liquid waste directly out into the water - don't ask me where or which, I didnt ask anymore, the problem is once you ask you start to find out lol. This is not how I would do it, but it's made me think could this be a responsible way to do it if on a river? Or a tidal river? Wee only.

It's not ideal really, diluting it and pouring it on local vegetation is the best solution. But believe it or not there are people who still follow a bucket and chuck it routine. just to add as I understand it on tidal rivers it's legal to empty your waste into them, lots of boats on these waters have sea toilets.

But I'm on a narrow, so have a simple Thetford with three cassettes and buy blue If we were millionaires we'd still go with a Thetford, although the pipe hole is too small so makes emptying hard. I like to pour lots of water in from bottles kept beside the loo to make emptying easier. Where does one keep the spare cassettes? Use the toilets in pubs and Debenhams to save room in your cassettes. Wetherspoons is good, no-one ever takes notice of you if you nip in just to use their loos.

Ahh hello naughty fox! Good to hear from you. I've used the thetford cassette on a motorhome so I know what I'd be signing up for with that and also used this system you refer to.
I've seen spare cassetts on the rooves. I'd have space in my engine room.
Whatever I go for - any guests, unless young or old and desperate, will be taking it with them!
Finding a public loo can work, if you don't leave it until the last minute; but when it comes down to it, don't you just much prefer to relax on your own Naughtyfox?!

The real benefits of having a compost loo are you don't have to use public toilets to keep from filling your cassette to quickly, so visitors can use your loo as long as you remind them to sit down and put some sawdust/etc in when finished. You will never have to go into a dirty smelly elsan point ever again, also your cruising pattern doesn't have to revolve around where the elsan points are. You didn't mention wether ycor planing to cruise your boat or are going to be on a mooring.

It is worth pointing out that BWML donβt allow composting toilets within their marinas. Worth checking if any marinas you are thinking of using have rules regards composting toilets.

My gran used to pour her pee onto a Rhodadendrum bush that she had in a pot next to her front door...her way of ensuring acid soil...It stunk

Not being tied to or hunting for an elsan service is a benefit for sure.

Our boat was originally pump-out, but a former owner fitted a vacu-flush cassette system.
Great system for 12 or so months (no chemicals needed) but smelly when emptying.
Then issues developed with vacuum seals, and after about six months of trying to rectify the problems, I grew tired of it, ripped it out and skipped it cassettes and all.
We bought a simple porta-potty whilst researching a replacement, and eventually I fitted the Thetford as the easiest, fail safe, least complicated system available.
Two cassettes in the engine 'ole and one on.
Never had a problem using elsans, generally they're easy to find and reasonably clean, after all I'm only emptying waste not dining.
If necessary I'll call at a yard and pay, but rarely is it necessary.
Blue works ... tried alternatives but blue works.
I tend to use slightly more than necessary and consequently emptying isn't a smelly or onerus task ... but we spend more on blue as a consequence.
Simple system with nothing to go wrong.

I mean, if you can do it, why can't we? Still, rather disgusting. People swim in the Nene-Nen.

Why don't you just throw poo at the swimmers, Gazza? Surely it amounts to the same thing?
