The problems we see now are (In my personal view) due to the sheer volume and the totally different mores and standards and also a determination to alter London (and Britain) to their views. (and the sheer mind numbing stupidity of those that allowed/encouraged it to happen) John, I hope you are not thinking of Enoch's famous speech here, I really do. In the past, immigrants were more-or-less forced to assimilate, these days it is simply not the case. A chap I used to know, who was from Tobago, who sometimes fixed cars for cash, was so old-school he would wear a shirt and tie even when he was under a car (under his overalls). How times have changed.

I Blame Tiny Blur and his Brown friend.
Not sure what they were doing. Maybe trying to get more generic Labour voters into the country in order to wipe out the Tories?
Or maybe not. Perhaps it was a long term plan.

One of the things I love about London is the different mix of people as you go though different areas - but mainly everyone is welcome in all areas and mixes. Obviously there are exceptions to this.

Perhaps it was a long term plan. I think you are right about Blair and Brown trying to pull the middle in. However it backfired(?!) and turned the Labour party into a new Tory party and destroyed the middle party at the same time. As a result, the ‘working class’ have nobody to turn to anymore. I think the truth is that there hasn’t been a very strong ‘movement’ in this country for a long time. That only usually happens when enough people get angry enough. I think a lot of the ‘working class’ have worked out what’s going on now and are not only behind Brexit as a protest, but also as a realisation that our freedoms are being threatened.

It works in Jerusalem too apparently. Most people do want to get along with eachother. Isn’t that what we find with our canal culture? It’s just the buggers who want to take and not give back.

How times have changed. (within reason) surely this is only fair, after all if you migrate to somewhere with a different language and culture it is only right and proper that you learn the language and fit in with the local mores. (or at least respect them) You can preserve your local culture as part of your family history but to attempt to force the society which you have voluntarily joined to change to suit you is crazy and incidentally I wasn't thinking of Enoch Powell's speech (I have noticed however that very few of those who bring Powell's speech up as an example of dreadful racial incitement have actually listened to it. It's worth doing so, analysing carefully what he actually says rather than what other people claim that he says, which is not the same) It was certainly a very unwise speech by a very clever but rather naive man.

It's not called "Londonistan" for nothing.

Not much of a signal here, so I shall sit this one out. Time to go to bed and listen to the radio, and glance through the engine manual. We have enjoyed meandering up the River Soar over almost 2 weeks, and this Leicester branch of the GU is coming up with lovely scenery. Aiming for Watford Locks, I guess, tomorrow.

The problem is, CRT has decided that London now includes up to fenny stratford. This has confused London boaters, and resulted in the little shits moving about. I'm very near the "real" London at the moment, as in within the m25. It's a fuckin shithole, well, the canals are anyway. The locks resemble the Amazon rain forest, inclusive of waterfalls, and the canals are nothing but shallow drains full of shit. Boat rubbish dumped anywhere and everywhere by bearded weirdos with little scotch terriers tucked under their arms. Boaters? Are they fuck as like.
Feel better now 😏

Moved to London 30 years ago; had a great time! About 15 years in it started to jade on me and then I became a bus driver and got a constant eyeful of the true dysfunction of the place! Nice to see a video with some actual facts innit.. one of the scariest bits of bus driving was having to stop folks getting on all in a crush, used to only happen at peak times but it’s pretty constant these days. Can’t drive if you can’t see out your mirrors, and can’t see out your near side mirror if there’s folks rammed in at the front! Used to shout “bus is full” and they’d stop getting on - but these days they just rush the doors, oyster reader be dammed!
Moved onto the cut in nice quiet midlands with a mooring, leccy, water and quiet - bliss!! This was about 4 years ago, recon I’ve already added a few years more to my lifespan by getting rid of that stress... 😁
Now I just drive for a bloody company who insist on putting rubbish breaking down buses in service, drive bloody treacherous muddy country lanes in unsuitably large deckers... One of our deckers was crawling past some bodge-arse roadworks on one of these lanes when the (in-kerbed) road started to collapse and the bus started to tilt alarmingly - he had to evacuate the passengers so they could all stand by the road watching the decker verrrry slowly tip over onto a hedge! 😂 kno wonder I’m off with stress! No service control apart from ring ‘em on yer mobile... then speak to an answerphone “hello, I’m broke down between Piddled£ck and Knobsville with about 12 ranty OAPs on board - heeelp!. Ah well at least I don’t have fume-induced asthma anymore..😂😂😂
Glad to be out of the shi(hole that London definitely is these days, despite all this - AND I LIVE ON A BOAT! 😁😁
Can’t believe how much of a floating slum the canals became over that time tho.. 😢

When we did that stretch down to Brentford (as part of the Thames ring) last year it was noticeably worse than when when we did it a few years ago.

I spent 4 years in London in the mid 70's and then returned when son located there. There are parts of London I like and bits I don't There has been a great deal of change over the years..some good some bad. I did not find the canals in the 70's so i cannot comment on them but I've always roamed . Certainly I saw more violence years ago but perhaps that was because I did not realise there were no go areas...I'm a bit wiser now.

I'm planning my yearly trip to Rickmansworth later this month before escaping to Sanity on Thames for August. GU bottom end wasn't too bad last year to be fair but once the deterioration sets in it can degrade pretty fast. Its a wonderful canal is the GU. Not sure I'll bother going past Ricky as I don't want to fall in any holes.
