Finally got a couple of weeks off with the OH in August - we WERE thinking of cropredy but cos I’ve been off work we can’t afford the tickets and I don’t think I’d enjoy the crowded bits anyway.. looked at doing the Leicester ring but that might be a bit full- on...
I always said I’d like to take her back up to tixhall wide, just to do some donuts in a 57’ boat - but that’s not quite reason enough... ahem..
Thoughts of going up past Stone, but then there’s Scrote-on-Trent to contend with during skool hols... or peel off Burton way?
At a loss, my head has been so far up my own arse with stress that I’ve just not given it much thought - ideas anyone?
Ps. Sorry I’ve not been about much; we lost dad in July last year and it’s all been a bit shit.. could do with a nice cruise in August...
If there’s any water left to cruise upon of course 😮😮

If there’s any water left to cruise upon of course 😮😮 Sorry to hear of your recent troubles. A good cruise will help I’m sure. I wouldn’t write Stoke off, been through there a few times in the last couple of years. No problems touch wood, actually found the locals very friendly. In fact, tempting fate here I guess but there seems to be less troublesome folks around in general the last couple of years, canalside I mean. Maybe they stay in on computer games more these days. Or maybe the fact that some many more decent folk walk and cycle the canals keep the idiots away. Anyway, the Caldon is beautiful. Would be a nice two week trip from the Ashby I guess. Almost everywhere we go has its merits. Despite the moaning I hear from some boaters we have lovely times almost everywhere we boat. Enjoy!

Yes, another vote for the Caldon. Etruria is fine for mooring then if you set off reasonably early you'll be through Stoke before the scrotes are out of bed, although I've never had any problems in Stoke myself.

Sorry to hear of your bad times ...... a good long cruise does help drop the old stress levels. That's what I could do with My plans for this summer just seem to keep unravelling, at the rate it's going Sabina H is not going to be going anywhere this summer At least I get the odd trip out on other peoples boats and still live on a boat My only plans so far still intact, are to move the little boat North in the autumn (but even there, some mechanical issues could alter the start date)

If there’s any water left to cruise upon of course 😮😮 C&RT haven't yet perfected their techniques for ensuring that the river or river fed navigations are impassable by late Summer, so why not head for Fradley and turn right when you get there instead of turning left for Stoke ? From Alrewas, six locks down from Fradley, you'll be spoiled for choice of river fed or river navigations that will take you to Leicester, Nottingham, Lincoln, Doncaster, Sheffield, Leeds, York, etc., etc.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you get time out to destress on your boat wherever you chose to go. Maybe not look at doing to great a distance but stopping as and when to enjoy what the countryside has on offer..that and the lovely pubs

On the subject of the Caldon, I just did the Stoke section this morning, I moored last night by the James Brindley statue at Etruria (which incidentally is universally known locally as "Shithead" due to its head being a frequent resting place and improvised sanitary station for avian wildlife) and I'm currently at Milton. Didn't have any issues at all, just the usual joggers, dog walkers, cyclists etc along the towpath.

Do hope things come together for you John... guys..... thanks so much for the suggestions - never even thought of the Cauldon! Thanks also for all the kindness and good vibes.. glad i resisted the urge to post this on t'other place, would prolly be arse-deep in an argument with someone who thinks living on an online mooring is norty and spoiling their speeding fun ;-)

How about a nice little trip to Lechlade and back? Depends what you like and yes the top of the Thames is a bit tedious but its very pleasant and gives your steering arm some exercise.
