Got up this morning to low voltage on my batteries, cruised from southam to rugby and still got low voltage, 11.8v now, also my rev counter is not really pointing to where it should be, bouncing around at 2000, 3000 where I normally cruise at 16000.
safe to say my alternator is fucked?
looking at the place stabby pointed me to in cov for my starter they also repair alternators, is it worth getting it fixed as i can see in white pen a date which I am guessing is from the last time it was fixed, can’t read the bloody year though but know it was pre 2015 as that’s when I bought the boat.
money, money, money.... batteries will more than likely need replacing also.

Checked the connections on the alternator but not the batteries as the Rev dial issue didn’t strike me as a battery connection issues, will have a check in the morning though as just had a shower and enjoying a nice bottle of Tempranillo.

rev dial does indicate it's not getting the correct feed from the alternator.
Your batteries are not necessarily goosed ..... yet they can discharge to below 11 volts and still come back without much loss of capacity
(from memory and without checking) you can often recover from as low as 10.5(?) 10.6(?)

Yes if the rev counter is playing up, sounds like an alternator problem. If it intermittent sounds like the brushes, which could be a cheap fix.

If its a fairly normal generic alt I'd buy an equivalent new unit put it on then take the old one apart and check it.
Otherwise you end up paying someone to test it when it might be nackered.
That way you get a new alternator plus a spare if its an easy fix like brushes. If you can't fix the old one you have a new one anyway.
Obvious question being how much does the man charge you to do the test.

It’s one that makes my beer go cold in the fridge when it works, about as much as I know..
It started working again when I set off this morning for about an hour then bombed our, gonna pull it out when I get back to mooring this afternoon and take it home for a look for some part numbers, thinking of upgrading anyway as it’s only 40w.

That comes as a unit with brushes attached - click on the link and you can see them in the photo; centre of the unit pointing downwards.
