At the end of the day, volockies may offer help & advice, but you do not have to follow it unless there is a specific reason.Your boat, your responsibility, your choice. We've been lucky thus far & only met helpful, none bolshie vollies-apart from one who was a bit quick on the paddles & I asked him to check if I was ready.Paul also vollies, but only does what folk want him to.At the end of the day,it's your boat & in many cases your home. Absolutely agree. We have encountered many great volockies, eg the Lapworth flight guys who set all the locks ahead for us in the pissing rain. But also encountered some idiots eg the guy on Atherstone who physically prevented me from opening a paddle when I wanted to, the guy on the Hatton flight who shouted at Jeff in front of a whole lot of gongoozlers because he opened the second bottom paddle when there was only 1 boat descending in the lock(!). The problem is not that all volockies are power crazed idiots - of course they are not - it is that CRTβs quality control and monitoring of βrogue volockiesβ is very poor. A few volockies think they are very important and in charge. But they are not.

All the problems with volunteers appear to me to stem from the fact that they or rather some think they have the status and credibility of long standing full time permanent lock keepers who knew their job inside out. Like Barry on the Five rise. Now long gone I believe.
You just knew when he told you to do something he was correct and you just did as instructed. He took us through knowing our boat was just a bit too long for the chambers but he knew what we needed to do to get past each gate and we just followed his instructions.
When he said 'No, stay on the boat, I need one at the bow and a steerer on the counter, the one at the bow needs to push the bow past the gate as it opens'.
You just did it.

Hi Nick, The guy that you're so very unhappy with looks a lot like the guy that other boater were really pleased with, and he seems to be a nice guy on their video. My glasses need a bit of cleaning, but I do think that it's the same guy that you can see here starting at 7:08 if you don't want to watch the whole video. Peter. We donβt pay them Β£900 so some random blokes can come and feed off our boating like parasites. Haha! Liked that. Next time you see a volockie shout: "Fuck off, Parasite!" What concerned me today is that the EA are advertising for volunteer lock keepers. Presumably so that some pensioner can steal the job from a salaried employer. Job stealing parasites.

We first came up the Wigan flight in 1982 and down 2 weeks later, having hired from Coles Morton Marine, then based below the lock by the drydock.
The ground paddles were then the original Jack Clough type where you had to undo a handcuff lock then heave them up. Mind you, dad was steering so 3 of us on the locks, not like now with my arthritis and Js back.
We came back down in a snow storm in company with another boat crewed by 2 men who gave up halfway. Probably too young to have been Nick!

It's a sewer tube going to bleedin' Skipton, not a Saturn V rocket off to Jupiter. I sometimes drive my bus and pretend I am in charge of the Destiny off of Stargate. It makes my mornings more interesting.
