I'd put a linear actuator on it with a remote control switch for each relay.
Pwm speed controller to get the actuator movement to a sensible speed.
Satellite dish jacks are 36v and work nice and slow on 12v so no speed control required. Plus satellite jacks are designed to be out in the weather all the time.
Technically you would want to devise a "full follow up" system ideally which automatically returns the rudder to the central position after each use otherwise it seems probable there would be some undesirable interaction with other vessels and bankside structures.
Stick steering sounds wonderful but quite tricky to implement on a DIY basis.

so that's Trina, Faffer and Bodger all with challenged eyesight. Mebbe it's one of the necessary qualifications to join this bunch of rabble-rousers. Any more of you out there?

My vision is ok never needed glasses but also never been to an optician.
To be fair the only time it was tested was when I passed the driving test in 1991 and I was asked to read a numberplate. First time obviously.

First time obviously. I went to do a speeding refresher, forgot my new glasses, just memorised a few numbers around the front door of the training centre.

The post I misunderstood, wrongly thinking you meant Shanners. The geyser who likes watching ladies tennis. For once your misspelling of geezer is appropriate. Perhaps we should rename him Old Faithfull.
