Typical hyperbole from the BBC reporting on the "collapse" of the dam wall. The dam wall is damaged, is apparently in danger of collapse but not even a school child would describe it as collapsed, as I type this. No wonder there's a lot of negativity about the BBC, they seem completely unable to report any news story accurately choosing instead to exaggerate everything. I'm glad I don't pay the licence fee, I would feel seriously ripped off.
If the dam wall were to collapse in due course, how would they report it? "The collapsed dam wall collapsed properly?" "The previous partial collapse became a total collapse following a night of heavy rain (probably an hour or two of drizzle)?"

The locks have re opened now. The Trust must have had a think, realised that holding back water doesn't make any sense when they are trying to release water.

Quite frightening really, hopefully this will make people realise how serious the lack of preventative maintenance has become. A two weeks' holiday in Thailand, full board, costs less than 4 nights in a B&B in Buxton. A mother that was breastfeeding her baby was swallowed by the hungry child, rescuers arrived too late on the scene ( Latest News !). They didn't say if this sad story happened in a B&B in Buxton during a 4 night stay however. Peter.

My additions in brackets. Sarah Rudy at the Canal & River Trust said the charity was doing all it could but timescales were unclear. (mainly because we don't have a clue on what we are doing) She said: "Inflows into the reservoir eased overnight and (everyone else) has been able to make progress in drawing down the water however there is still some way to go "We appreciate that the people of Whaley Bridge will want clarity on timescales, and they have our utmost sympathy, however this is a complex operation (we've been caught with our pants down) and timescales are not currently clear. (We are hoping the other agencies bale us out of the shit). "We are (doing what we are told) by our colleagues at the Environment Agency, Derbyshire Police, Derbyshire County Council and the Fire & Rescue Service, and further updates will follow (when Tony dunkley stops jumping up and down on Mr Parrys head). Did she mention anything about their plans to reduce the environmental damage that's been caused by retrieving all the young trees and shrubs that were growing up through the cracks in the concrete face of the spillway, and re-planting them elsewhere ?

Interesting comment on the radio from the guy presently living in the old dam watcher's cottage that the overflow runoff channel was full of weeds and that they are now digging it out to get more water flow. Yes, only now maintaining this vital channel.
How did the vandals get up the spillway to plant those trees?
Is it time now for the heads at C&RT to roll?

I hope the dam collapses.
Let's face it, we all want to see the fireworks.
Wouldn't it be great to be on a boat riding the tsunami past New Mills Marina?

My wifes best friends sister wouldn't, her house would be in the line of fire. Our local news featured people devastated by the floods in the Dales this week, one grown man, a farmer broke down in tears. I'm not sure they would appreciate such a stupid comment.

I’ve never endorsed the use of ritalin but maybe there is a case with Foxy sometimes.

I'm only saying people watch the News because of the drama and the scandals and exciting things.
Why was this not in The News a year ago as 'Small trees and bushes partially block dam's overflow channel'? No interest in that. But that is what seems to be the cause of all this. Let's just tune in when the dam really is about to break, eh?
