No Telemachus 'Wigan is lucky to have them' is their opinion, based on their experience. They didn't say anything about anyone with an opposing view. The reader must consider which if any is closest to their opinion ... or not. I did not enjoy the luxury of assistance up or down Wigan last year so I have no dog in the fight. Rog

Rog But they are speaking for others. “We were lucky to have them” would be fine. “Wigan is lucky to have them” is asserting that everyone who uses the flight is lucky to have them. Which as well as being wrong, suggests a thinly veiled agenda, not just a personal view.

Is there an airport in Wigan now? It would seem so if you read Facebook. Bear in mind next time you traverse the flight, that the correct form of address to the volockies is "Captain".

Being single handed, volockies are a godsend as far as I'm concerned. I do understand though that others, with crew, enjoy doing locks and could feel their enjoyment of boating to be on the wane due to volockies sprouting up like mushrooms, pretty well anywhere close to a main road. Clear this up for me though, if you want to do the locks yourselves is it not simply a case of asking/ telling the resident volockies that you don't need help "morning/ afternoon, we have crew, we don't need any help, thanks very much (big smile)" and then carrying on as normal? Am I missing something?

Am I missing something? It should be like that of course. Well in fact it should be the other way round - the volockie is supposed to ask the boater if they would like assistance. If it were like that in reality (and it is in some places) then fine. And we certainly wouldn't turn down help setting ahead. But the reality in some places is volockies taking charge, issuing orders and in some cases, doing things that are dangerous or at least bad practice. They are out of control!

I've always done locks single handed in my boats never had any trouble. I prefer not to have assistance because I enjoy the locking procedure. It is by far the most enjoyable part of boating on canals as far as I am concerned.
I will decline help IF asked but you don't always get asked.
