I intend checking my valve clearances this Autumn. Barry’s shire 45. Have done hundreds of times on petrol engines. Is there anything different that I should look out for on Diesel engines?

No, . . nothing any different to do or look for. The valves in diesels deteriorate in condition and performance in much the same way as those in petrol/LPG engines, . . they just take longer to reach the end of their serviceable life because of the lower temperatures they're operating at. Valve clearances are a frequently neglected routine maintenance item that has a much greater effect on engine performance than most people realize. Late valve timing and lower peak compression pressures caused by tappet clearances that have opened up are bad news for both CI and SI engines.

I find it very odd that checking/adjusting valve clearances is not mentioned at all in Beta’s maintenance schedule for our engine. And yet Kubota saw fit to put a sticker on the rocker box advising what the correct valve clearances are. I have, needless to say, checked them from time to time although to be fair to Beta, so far they have not needed adjusting (3000 hrs).
