It's a pretty dodgy situation on elfin safety grounds I would have thought something like that could be enough to get a canal shut down for inspections.
Surely if that had been road or rail infrastructure there would be some major consequences.

Things get old. Proper maintenance means assessing the situation and replacing items before they fail. Or fixing them quickly if something happens unexpectedly. What I would be interested in is seeing the records for this particular balance beam - how old, when last inspected, have there already been recommendations for replacing, etc.?

Never mind...
CRT will hoick it out, put a bit of blue string on the end of the gate, say navigation is open for narrowboats but widebeams need to book 7 days in advance to allow us time to assemble a team to pull on the blue string.
How did you know that ?

Update at 20:30.
'Please be advised that we have successfully repaired the balance beam and the lock is now operational to users.
There is no access across the bottom gates, but it can be opened and closed. Further repairs will commence next week, and we will endeavour to keep our customers updated.'
Would be interesting to see how they repaired it...

Just noticed - closure info puts the reason down to vandalism...

Just noticed - closure info puts the reason down to vandalism... At least they've been honest enough to admit it, . . C&RT have been systematically vandalizing all our waterways since July 2012 !

Everything working OK today. Bit of a bodge but being fair it does the job ! I got up the lock OK with a bonus. Water was clear I spotted a twin wall stainless chimney terminal in the lock so it came out with the keb. If anyone wants it you know where I am

The top of the other gate is rotten in the same place. What's the chance of it being fixed before it breaks. Wouldn't have taken much longer to make 2 repair kits. Only one visit to the site.

Denham deep closed again this time the opposite bottom gate has some sort of problem around the collar according to the stoppage notice. Got me idly wondering if these rather large gates are proving to be a bit of a question mark. Seeing as it is impractical to get a contract land based crane to the site, and there are relatively small bridge holes both sides of that lock, is CRT actually capable of doing a gate replacement or will they rely on bodging and re-bodging the repairs. At some stage the gates will need to be replaced but the question of how to lift them seems to be quite interesting. canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices/16639-denham-deep-lock-87It seems not impossible that the bodge repair of the balance beam which snapped off has unbalanced the forces and put an unexpected problematic loading into the collar of the opposite gate. Could get interesting this one.

Of course they could go back to the old methods and build sheerlegs ...... that is if anyone knows how to tie the correct knots

How long is it going to be before Parry & co. kill somebody ? It makes one wonder why the residents of Whaley Bridge haven't lynched them already, for their inconvenience and uncertain future. Drop in house prices in Whaley Bridge? I was giving some thought about the problems of Whaley Bridge This situation must have been a nightmare for everyone who was effected by the heavy rainfall Can you imagine being a Landlord in the area ? What will happen to property prices? Will the area be blighted now ? Will anyone have the ability to sell a house now in the area? Will it now be on the flood map when searches are done ? I'm sure it will not help property to sell in the area for quite a few years to come ... The local property market will probably slow down dramatically as a result of the coverage, and some people might have to reduce their prices in order to sell. I feel for everyone who was affected - it must have been terrifying to think that you could lose everything. www.propertytribes.com/whaley-bridge-dam-incident-landlord-views-t-127641864.htmlArea is blighted. I know a resident there, they now have no house insurance nor can they get a quote for reinsurance. House prices are not applicable, no one can sell one even when it is above the flood area. Have a look at local estate agents' web pages! Missing balance beam is due to a new specie of wood boring worm, Parry's Vandalias Aqua-Grande. Who would dare to suggest lack of inspection and maintenance?
