Read an article somewhere about someone blacking their boat with chlorinated rubber. The view was that it performed better than traditional blacking.
Any views on here?

Would your boat then bounce off bridges? Some would find it useful. 😂. I've now used keelblack twice, I'm happy with it. Easy to apply.

I'm advised that the frequency of blackings is more significant to long term health of a steel hull, than what is actually applied.
My regular coal boat supplier has his boat out annually as he often breaks ice whilst working.
We black ours with basic Intertuf 16 but do it every two years.
The other boat blacked whilst we were out, was a Hudson of about 12 years of age.
The hull was very pitted and in much worse condition than ours, but it had not been out of the water for four years.
I was advised that frequent blacking, whilst obviously not able to improve a hull's condition, will arrest deterioration.
What is applied is secondary.

Take your point Rog but surely the frequency is driven (or should/could be) by the performance of the covering. If it is not what is the point of using 2 pack, which seems to be the "darling"of the moment? If we are only talking bitumen type products then I agree - we do ours every 3 years.

My theory is that hull painting frequency is driven by boatyard owners' desire to make money and boaters' reluctance to have scruffy looking hulls.
I reckon if you put a steel boat in water and never take it out the money you save over the years by not painting the hull would cover the cost of any hull repairs, if needed.

I'm a stitch in time sort of person @someboater ... much rather have the boat out and thoroughly checked and blacked every two years.
Other options are available.

Fair enough. I'm a CBA type with no ability to see the bigger picture. Put it this way - when I was 20 I could never imagine the year 2000 happening. Not possible for my brain to compute. That was almost 20 years ago. I'm 45 now and can not imagine being 50. Its just not something my brain can do. Apparently this is a common trait of Aspergers Syndrome as is constant unending anxiety regardless of how good life is Anyway more Glorious Sunshine today which IS a Good Thing

I was ten when England won the soccer World Cup in black and white ... saw it in colour at the pictures and it blew my mind Science fiction and Tomorrows World were set in the 2000's which were a distant foreign, unimaginable land back then. The only constant in life is that there WILL be changes. Rog

I'm a stitch in time sort of person @someboater ... much rather have the boat out and thoroughly checked and blacked every two years. I agree with Rog. As it happens, because our hull could do with 2 'shoe plates' at the back to make a new 'sacrificial edge', it may be that we'll be in dry dock again next June for this, and at the same time another pressure-washing and blacking. We blacked our boat this June with SML Ballastic Black and it seemed like a very nice paint to slap on. Only time will tell if it was a good 'un. We used Spencer Coatings' bitumastic paint 3 years ago (July 2016) and when our boat was pressure washed the surface was so good we didn't need to scrape anything off. We wouldn't re-black for another 2 or 3 years normally, but I think the shoe plates are necessary, before it's too late. Could go another 2 years but there's a dry dock next door to where we are parked and i have already been round to ask the score.

Whilst not making a case for lefties, a few things here. Who decided, and when, that it's racist to paint your face black? And, why is this racist? Next, the theme of the do was 'Arabian Knights'. Given that Arabian people have a certain amount of colour in their faces was it not the organisers of the do that were racist, knowing that folk would likely try to mimic Arabs (including dark faces) when organising such a thing? Finally, why should someone have to apologise for something deemed racist today, when it wasn't deemed racist at the time it took place? We can ask this last question quite reasonably, it seems highly unlikely that a school would deliberately organise something that was racist.

Not wanting to protect the lefty prick but to be fair to him, if he decided that white people painting their faces to look like Arabs (even though he went for a much darker shade than Arab, maybe an Arab that had been sunbathing in the desert) was racist AFTER the 'Arabian Knights' do, what he did at the do wasn't racist. People are expected to behave in line with the laws and societal norms of the present, not the future. He should tell those accusing him of impropriety this, and to do one. He won't of course; being a weak lefty hand wringing prick.
On a similar theme I recall 'Ali Baba and the forty thieves' If anything is racist, surely this title is.
