That's why I think someone is going to get a bargain. Obviously a lot of work to do but for 15k or less its a seriously good base. Of course fashions change. Maybe these aren't popular any more. Wasnt there someone looking for a new boat to put on their mooring down that way?

I'm intrigued by the idea that you could put conditions on the sale of a boat. A bit like covenants on houses. I'm sure with boats this must be a goodwill rather than legal thing. I guess NigelMoore might know if he can be disturbed from his pipe and whisky (and slippers?) routine. I think you have mistaken the import of the ad's wording. It is nothing like a continuous binding covenant such as takes place on some real property transfers, it is simply a contractual term whereby the seller promises to undertake work on the boat as part of the deal. You drag me away from my creature comforts for this?!

So is it enforceable after the deal?
I suppose it could be if the requirements were specified by a surveyor.
In the event it appears that the seller paid for the works anyway.
I just found it interesting.
And relax.

Must have been someone with no beam limit on their mooring. Maybe on the Thames or a marina.

You mean waldamar . He has an knackered thames lighter at Pin Mill which is currently listed on apolloduck, with a berth. This london.apolloduck.co.uk/boat/house-boats-static-houseboat/552547I've never been there but I think pin mill is south east coast (essex or suffolk) so yes reasonably close to sandwich but you would have to cross the Thames estuary which is a bit worrying. I enjoyed waldamar's contributions to the forum.

The John William was a near neighbour of mine. It certainly has had an interesting life. It had a junk rig. When it was sold at Viking Marina in Goole it went straight down river to Hull for replating, at a cost of something like 15-17 grand which the old owners paid for as part of the deal. I would never have recognised it now, but the current owners have retained the "windows" around the stern of the hull. So it did have all the replating done? So its probably a good buy then. The John William had all the replating done Kris, the work costing something like £17,000, the owners Eric and Fionna paid £10,000, and the new owners apparently paying the balance. They did it that way to ensure the work got done, and ensure the barges survival. Eric was not well, so it was basically down to Fionna to deal with it all. Fionna remained in the area for awhi!e and living in a cruiser in our marina.

If it was replated rather than overplated then its interesting. If that is true it could help to keep the boat away from the scrap man. Hopefully someone will take it on. Its a nice boat and a good price.
