Patty, you need to get on top of this issue pronto . There is nothing worse than being cold, what form of heating do you have?. Phil It's daughter in laws house.... apparently previous owners spent 2k on heating bills a month and I think she's decided to keep it off till she feels absolutely nec..OK for those who work all day and away from the place until late evening. I am going to ensure that before next time something is done. Wow!! 2k per month, that's a hell of a bill. We now live in a 1 bed bungalow and dress as we always have ie T Shirts and trackies, we were never cold in the boat and refuse to be cold now we are ashore. Combie gas boiler cost is £32 per month while electric costs £38 per month The stat is set at 23°c Phil

I think £2k a month heating is an error. Even the massive house I lived in as a child while the old man was spending the cream of post war boom sold off family silver would never attract such a high heating bill. This pile Red pin is where the orchard was. I used to fire arrows at the apples with my bow. House is up a bit to the left. Ridiculous thing probably the type of house a lot of people dream of owning. We had an AGA innit.

Well the info came from daughter in laws mum but I dunno. I would think to effectively heat this place it is a lot of money . the windows are very large and although some effort has been made with draught excluders its pretty basic. There's no double glazing, very high ceilings and as I said the rooms are large. Decor is faded tired excellence...I would guess, prob 15/20 or more years ago, stunning. I look and see a vast money pit just to insulate, repair electrics and maintenance but suspect they'll live with it as it is. There are 2 massive pine trees in the garden, one of which I think is dead, they need at least reducing in height if not felling altogether..but they 'know best' It has enormous potential to be a fabulous house but I think will remain in a time warp.

To be fair to them patty, they probably see the house as a good investment, and that's all well and good. But it is unreasonable to ask someone to house sit without adequate heating. If they were not prepared to turn the heating on, they should leave the house empty. Rog

I would think if they chopped the trees down you could have a fire in a room and the bedroom, I am assuming that old house has fireplaces?

Would a couple of fan heaters warm a couple of rooms for you?

The answer in a big house is to have a stove like what we have, a box of wood a day and you can wear T-shirts when it's minus 30 outside:

I think you've got more chance of him being taken out by Carbon Monoxide than being eaten by an inanimate object.

I think you've got more chance of him being taken out by Carbon Monoxide than being eaten by an inanimate object. Was thinking that the snowman was angry with him, for making the house inhabitable for his race.

Would a couple of fan heaters warm a couple of rooms for you? I have got some in Ants store that I'll take next time and just keep kitchen warm. As to fire places they r quite small and to me rather odd looking..I'll post pics next time round....I wouldn't think they've been swept for quite q while as the last owners relied on the 'central heating' Maybe house is an investment but without maintenance and money invested into its upkeep it'll be a slow rise in value. Those fir trees need to be culled..one defo dying

I've started experimenting with anthracite, and it seems good when mixed with Excel but needs a strong flow of air to stay alight if used alone, so not suitable to use exclusively if I go out to work for 12 hours or so with the stove damped down, but when I am on the boat and can adjust the air flow setting as and when then it's a good, hot long burning fuel.
