Anyone ever been to the NRM in York? Any advice, suggestions etc? Thinking of going on the Sunday of the next Bank Holiday weekend (as it's too far to travel there and back from home so we'd spend the night before and after on das Boot)

I have been funnily enough and its a good day out,Black Country Museum is good as is Gaydon Motor Museum and Duxford Air Museum has just reopened it American Display. If you gift aid when you buy your tickets at Gaydon, admission is then free for subsequent visits for 12 months

Yes, we went to the Black Country Museum last week, really enjoyed that. Same thing there, free admission for 12 months. Always wanted to visit the NRM.

The NRM is definitely worth a visit - we have been a few times but then it is not that far away from us. There is a hall which is stuffed full of memorabilia, old signage, timetables signals etc etc which is worth a good look around and the the ability to get very close or even onto some of the exhibits makes it a good museum to visit. It's always worth checking their web site to see if they have any special events planned, sometimes they have 'live' locos on display on bank holidays and the like. Be aware - York is a PITA to get around at busy times, don't even think about taking the car in on a Bank Holiday. Leave it at the Park and ride south of York (Assuming that is the direction you will be coming from), it's located right next to the York Designer Shopping Outlet and is well signposted. I can't recall which bus you need for the NRM, I think you get off at York Mainline station and walk but there may be a better/closer stop. The drivers should know.

Thanks for the advice, I will bear it all in mind but unfortunately we can't now make it next weekend as my boy is away on a Duke of Edinburgh Scheme camping trip... next Bank Holiday is the Crick boat show so I'm guessing it will now be sometime when he finishes school in June.

I've never been before, the plan is to travel up on the Saturday and stay on the boat which is moored near Stretton Stop, visit the show on the Sunday by car, then stay on the boat again Sunday night before travelling home on the Bank Holiday Monday.
