Death threats, rape threats.
Really? Just for disagreeing with your political standpoint...
How bad have things got?

Pretty bad. But at the root of it is the ability to have an Internet presence without accountability. If everyone posting on twitter, Farcebook etc could easily be tracked to a name and address by police, such threats, eminating as they do from cowards, would cease.

I know it's a serious matter but were they real threats or just gobbing off, I mean would they carry them out.

I just wondered, not knowing the whole story. Is it a threat made to them personally or just some random post on social media?
Is anyone taking them seriously for example?

I know it's a serious matter but were they real threats or just gobbing off, I mean would they carry them out. I was once seriously asked this, by the police, in respect of a friend of mine, now deceased. I found it very curious that they would ask the question at all, rather than treat a threat as actionable in itself – especially as it was directed against a police officer, in a fairly senior protection role. The threat had been made calmly, deliberately and openly, in an attempt to force a particular course of action and investigation, so not an anonymous situation. At the end of a prolonged and considerate conversation the police asked me to rate the likelihood of the threat being carried out, on a scale of 1 to 10. It was a difficult and rather uncomfortable position to find myself in. I have never heard of such a thing, before or since, and I still wonder about it. It would be interesting to know how much this might be part of routine assessments, or whether it was a one-off, in consideration of unique circumstances.

It seems to have become the norm to mouth off and threaten those who are perceived to share a different view/lifestyle or whatever. As there are instances whereby these threats have materialised into violence I don't think they should be ignored Unfortunately there is not the manpower to investigate them all..perhaps its time to have a dedicated task force for this crime, maybe it would make some think twice. Its not nice, its terrifying...in the past Ive been threatened by having my house torched if I followed a particular action..I didn't do what now haunts me.. No-one should live in fear and be subject matter of threats to their life Sadly its part of the society we live in...

I was going to attack an MP (or anyone), I wouldn't blather about it on social media first.

I suppose that there are probably thousands "gobbing off" as it has been picturesquely described, to every one serious threat. I would imagine this background noise may have a tendency to obscure serious threats that need to be looked at

ten years ago I when I was still working I would have said that the internet and the mobile phone were probably the biggest and most beneficial inventions since the invention of the steam engine.
now I am beginning to think they are the most destructive.
I also believe that giving mankind the ability to be incredible nasty and stupid without fear of correction marks the beginning of the end, as Winston didn't say; think Trump, climate change, sexual abuse et al.
I see Western civilisation going the same way as the Roman Empire, with the rest of the world following on within a generation.

Telemachus has hit the nail on the head in my view. Words have become 'cheapened' by social media. Sadly some people say things simply because they can. Rog
