So... completely unlike the disregard for passengers' safety by South Western Trains trying to implement Driver Only Operated trains and saving money for more management bonuses, eh? perhaps you would like to clarify that statement. you imply that not having a train guard compromises passenger safety - how do you come to that conclusion? as a public transport professional I'm sure you have the complete and authoritative answer; please share it with us so that we can better understand the issue that you consider is important and should be brought to the attention of the members and the public who read this forum. by the way - do you have a conductor on your bus to safeguard passengers? ................. or are you just shooting from the hip ....................... again ?

As an Ex Rail Professional I can say ...... nah can't be bothered....
I blame these foreign tourists who come over from Scandinavia and insist they get the cheapest tickets possible even if some rules about split ticketing are ignored... If everyone paid a fair amount for their ticket the robbing gits wouldn't need to sack staff so they can enjoy watching the dividend money tree grow!

Ticketing wasn't my expertise... So perhaps you should now apologise for this: "I blame these foreign tourists who come over from Scandinavia and insist they get the cheapest tickets possible even if some rules about split ticketing are ignored. " I know of no ticket-splitting rules that we have ignored. I would humbly beg your forgiveness IF I had mentioned/accused you of doing anything wrong...

Assistance from guards? Are they necessary, yes. Travelling by train with Noreen, we have had the assistance of the guards when cataplexy paralyses her, to give us a little time to come round and get on the train. I doubt the driver would notice, stuck in his cab at the front of the train. What price shareholder's profits eh? Headline should be "greedy Share holders inflict danger on passengers" or similar. But no, let's bash the workers, accuse them of greed.

The guard is the man, The man in the van, Which is found at the rear of the train.
The driver up front Thinks the guard is a cunt And the guard thinks the driver's the same.

My take is that a train guard is not a necessity unless there is a serious emergency that requires the driver to need assistance with managing the incident.
But equally important surely is the 'personal touch' of having someone on the train, talking to passengers, helping with onward journeys etc etc. To me it makes no business sense to get rid of the guards.
