Well that's my new title because on Sunday night my dogs pulled me to investigate something which turned out to be a tiny hoglet, it only weighed 194gms which is well below the survival weight of 400gms to 500gms. The 2 local rescue centres were unable to accommodate any more so I was forced to assume responsibility for this tiny hoglet. He scoffed 3 bowls of dog food straight of, obviously starving and I put him in a box with a load of shredded paper together with a aluminium water bottle in a sock which he ended up lying on. So I have my work cut out till Spring keeping him alive. Reckon the Indian Summer is to blame, Phil

A chapter of one of Gerald Durrell’s books on life in Corfu, recounts the story of his having to leave rescued orphaned hedgehogs in the care of his sister. Despite his strict instructions to monitor food intake, he came back to find them with swollen tummies, with an indignant sister accusing him of cruel neglect, the poor little things being supposedly so hungry they ate everything she could give them.
They all died shortly thereafter. The moral was to ignore greedy demands which would never be satisfied, and just give them what they need (how you are supposed to know what that is escapes me). It’s allegedly a hedgehog trait, so if true you would be killing it by allowing it to eat all it wanted.

Good luck with the fostering, it will be worthwhile but not easy.

It's a shame MJG has flounced because I am sure he could have been of help here.

Thanks for the heads up Nigel, the initial feed was because the poor little mite was obviously starving, literally, however now food is now governed. I think I've got a handle on it now , time will tell. Phil

Yes … a bit disconcerting ….!
Hedgehog whisperer?
Hedgehog helper?
Hedgehog hero?
Hedgehog surrogate dad?
Whatever - well done you - and good luck to you all, Flappy (watch those shorts!!).

p.s. how are your dogs coping with the new arrival?
