Tight is better than loose when it comes to lock gates.

They told us ALWAYS open both gates. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera handy, Im sure you'll be able to spot loads of lazy narrow-boaters breaking the ‘single gate rule’ to add to your ‘non licence displaying’ list to snitch up👍 Yes - 2 years ago in Sowerby Bridge I observed some lazy tart shoving her narrowboat through Lock 1's lower gates, only the one gate open, of course. I said that the gate builders at Stanley Ferry said you should always open both gates. She said she often goes through without opening the other gate, she's an excellent steerer and never touches the side of the other gate. I said what about when it's windy? Another lying cow.

Did she have a current licence on display?

I wasn't looking then. I just noticed she was up her own arse. Horrible creature.

I think you would get short shift from me if you started lecturing me to always open both gates!

Sounds like one of ‘those sort of people’ (probably claiming benefits too!) who should be banished from the waterways so that decent, white, straight, honest, hardworking folk like yourself can have full, unhindered use of the canal system... Get her snitched up next time👍

I had quite a funny interaction with a crt man "on the ground" when I was coming into a GU lock with my 9ft wide boat going up. He said "that's what wears away the edges of the gates and causes leaking".
I politely pointed out that it is a physical impossibility for my boat's sides to ever touch the seal on either gate due to it being 9ft wide but he declined to agree. I was about to get the pencil and paper out and do a diagram when he said "we will agree to differ".
