That's interesting. Musk called the British rescuer a "pedo guy" in response to a negative comment about his (musk) offer to send a minisub or something. Does this just mean the super-rich are untouchable or is it okay to call someone a "pedo guy" on a social network platform (Twitter in this case). news.sky.com/story/elon-musks-win-in-pedo-guy-case-could-set-dark-precedent-11880150Seems quite dodgy to me. What's going on here ?

First this: "Does not make it right but that "pompous entitled prat on a first class season ticket" would have been worth far more to Virgin Trains West Coast than you on an advance. The same thing happens with Gold and Platinum card holders on airlines. In fact one a colleague of mine in uniform was sat in the queue to get of the M3 on to the M25 one morning and some guy wanting to push in the queue just held up his gold card at the passenger door window, implying she should let him in. Just accept some people think they are entitled." And I have just spotted the Elon Pedo article too. Does this mean everyone can now call Elon Musk a 'pedo' without fear of prosecution? Although that chap he insulted/wronged expecting $190 million - I mean, seriously? If I had $190 million for every time someone called me a nasty name I'd almost have enough as David Beckham and his skeleton-wife put together! "However, a jury sided with Musk after his lawyers argued it was no more than a playground insult and did not represent an actual allegation of pedophilia." - so we can all go round now calling people 'pedos' can we? What's good for the goose is good for the gander, eh? 'bullying billionaire' Musk dubbed Unsworth a 'pedo guy' on Twitter on 15 July 2018

Musk was a jerk for insulting that guy. I expect if you are Elon Musk you are probably used to doing entirely as you please all day every day. But if Musk had lost the case then it would have been open season for anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of so much as a joke. And I'd be in trouble for this post. Society is too litigious already.

I see he's had a dedicated cellphone holding hand fitted. That must be handy when driving.

Society is too litigious already. That's a fair point but I thought that particular insult was beyond the pale. You can call people sheepshaggers because that is vaguely amusing but calling someone a "pedo guy" is too rude it does not have anything funny about it. Other than when Chris Morris did it when it was funny but he was having a go at a self confessed "small bean regarder" so it's different.

It does seem that there is one rule for the rich etc. But the jury decided that the tweet hadn't had a detrimental effect on Unsworth's reputation. I am sure that they are right that everyone thinks of him as a hero for rescuing all those boys rather than think he might have done other things to them.

" Jury Rules You Can Call Elon Musk a 'Pedo Guy' " "It took a federal jury in Los Angeles less than an hour to throw out a $190 million defamation case against Elon Musk. Calling someone a “pedo guy” to an audience of millions of Twitter followers isn’t an accusation, the jury decided, because words are tricky little devils that can mean a lot of things and slinging nastiness on the internet, no matter how accusatory, doesn’t necessarily constitute defamation. So if, for instance, I say Musk is a sloppy bitch of a homicidal sociopath, I don’t mean for you to take that literally. It’s confusing, I know, but you see I’m using it’s other, less common definition, which simply means “a person I find disagreeable and would not share my ice cream with.” I’m pretty sure it comes from Old English." "Musk’s lawyers argued that “pedo guy” was slang for “creepy old guy” and that while Musk had thrown some serious shade, saying mean things about someone online shouldn’t be misconstrued as a literal accusation." gizmodo.com/jury-rules-you-can-call-elon-musk-a-pedo-guy-1840278623

There seems to be a certain arrogance that some people have who feel that the law is not designed for them, that they can buy their way out of trouble.. and they live by their own rules, call people what they like and be above the law The damages that some 'stars' get is beyond sense n reason but I think the argument is that they have more to loose/that defamation affects them in a greater capacity Even so asking for $190million in damages is greed whatever circle you move in.
Us mere mortals get abuse dished out with no recourse to damages....I mean I suppose one can try but realistically its best set aside if the person u r going up against has created an untouchable persona and is one of the elite.
I see it as the way of the world, always has been and I doubt attitudes of the legal eagles and their merry men will change anytime soon.

I remember reading an account of the social conditions in the time of Sir Francis’s Hellfire Club, wherein it was noted that another elitist club of young men considered it sport to bundle watchmen in their shelters and roll them down hills. One anecdote revealed that one of the more strong-minded watchmen arrested the culprits for the assault, and though the judge found them guilty, he publicly admonished the watchman for ‘interfering with the pleasure of the gentry’!

I often pass Medmenham Abbey on the Thames. I knew it was one of the Hellfire Club locations but didn't realise it had underground cave network. I wonder if it's still accessible or if they need to get a mini sub for it.

The club was later relocated from Medmenham further inland on another of Sir Francis's properties in West Wycombe, with a maze of tunnels that I think are open to visitors. Medmenham Abbey is now a private residence closed to visitors.

the jury's verdict is ridiculous IMHO.
a reasonable verdict would have been 'guilty of potential defamation' and an award of $1 plus the complainant's legal costs, subject to Musk making a sincere written apology on Twitter.

I disagree slightly - now the whole world's attention has been directed towards the 'pedo guy' - making some wonder is there any truth to this accusation. The man HAS been defamed/libelled/whatever. I'd have made Elon Musk (stupidly-named person) make a public apology, and fined him more than $1, perhaps a few thousand. $190 million is taking the piss. All that has come out of this is that Elon has shown the world he's a toss pot.
