When I was in March I went to a shop with 2 checkout girls and a couple of customers. And a traveling salesman.
Obviously the last one was not local but are you saying that the checkout girls (I did check them out as one is supposed to) and the customers did not live there ?
I suppose it's possible. I was simply passing through on my narrow boat so although I was a customer at that particular moment I definitely did not live there. Well apart from a day or two fixing a window problem.

This is definitely a point of view thing Phil. I lived and sailed in Ely for 25 years, the word that comes to mind for the surrounding 15 - 30 miles North, West and East apart from the rare oasis like Judes Ferry is "bleak". Or perhaps windswept. Nice sunsets but ... nope, I can't think of anything else though perhaps the solitude is attractive. All the waterways have high banks and zero view? A bit harsh, yes there are some high banks but a good view from the tiller, and there are more pubs around other than the ship. Jenyns Arms at Denver one at Hilgay, Littleport,,,,Ely The Cutter. And yes the solitude is lovely, depending on the time of your visit there can be a lot of boats or not many. You can cruise for hours and only see one or two other boats moving. Phil And don't forget the Kingfishers. More on the Great Ouse and tributaries than most other places we've cruised

I was told that March has the highest number of sex shops per head of population. Not that I have ever knowingly been anywhere near one. No idea if it's true and it was quite a long time ago I was told this by a mad boater who lived in a dyke nearby and watched formula one on the telly. Yes it’s true. There is one sex shop. And three inhabitants. FYI, the dykes don’t count. Well, unless you are afflicted by woke. Are there none in need of a finger?

Well christmas is done with, whether you like it or not, and the year end looms.
I've always found New Year celebrations slightly depressing, so rarely bother with any sort of shindig ... resolutions have always seemed slightly odd too ... but I know others do go in for them.
So for 2020 I'm planning on starting the year with 'dry January' ... save a little money whilst giving my body a rest.
We'd booked a week away for our fortieth wedding anniversary in 2019, but had to cancel due to family ill health ... hope to reinstate that around March/April.
Apart from that we'll take things as they come.
Anybody have new year party plans or resolutions they'd care to share ?
Rog

I will be painting the other side of the boat and continuing not drinking. I did have a few pints yesterday and I've polished off half a bottle of nice brandy over Christmas but "not drinking" changes more of your life than than the abstinence itself. I find I like that but I also like being a bit squiffy. Tricky.

Rog Ali and me are going to do a dry week after the 2nd of Jan. can’t do more as it’s Ali’s birthday mid month. Week will be enough anyway as my lost weight from stoptober has stayed away 😀 . Where’s that fox when it’s his round? Gave up on resolutions years ago as I never kept to them. I do hope to ride my motorbikes more this year and learn to sail. Trouble is both these get in the way of narrowboating .

Trouble is both these get in the way of narrowboating . Sailing is good. The peace and quiet, free power and honong skills needed to make the most of the wind is addictive. I was a Sunday/midweek laser then Solo racer for decades, mostly just at the local pit which was 3 minutes away. Bad back ended play eventually as it took all the time between race days to recover. I learned on school trips to Cowes sailing centre in wayfarers and 490's(?). Wayfarers are great at sea but too heavy for inland. Where are you intending to learn?

Rog Dry most of January - a very good friend has a big birthday party on the 25th; be rude not to drink really, So January will end on the 25th on my calendar 👍🍾🍻👌 Perhaps a little more effort on the fitness front, acutely aware I’m now in the 40+ bracket and my svelte figure may need a little more work rather than blind faith and good fortune! Boats out of the water February time so a big push on them before Easter - no cruising plans yet but they tend to formulate themselves so no drama on that. Oh, and maybe a sun dance every day for the next 4 months - got to get this water to sod off somehow 🤔🧐

Anybody have new year party plans or resolutions they'd care to share ? My New Year's Resolution is to stop making spurious and totally unfounded allegations of wrongdoing against others on the internet.

Well that's never going to last you Yorkie chomping, knife wielding, prostitute murdering, moped riding, mattress shredding, coffin dweller. But happy new year anyway Rog
