Just spotted in the paper. A young mum (with glam photo) claimed she was met with a wall of smoke after being awakened in the early hours by a smoke alarm. Tumble dryer left on caught fire. Strangely a investigative engineer was denied access and was unable to report on the appliance,....... why? It's simple, don't go to sleep with appliances left on. Phil

We never do. In fact nothing is even left on standby when we're either asleep or out.
A house fire scares me. You loose absolutely everything.

I rarely leave stuff on standby..never use washing machine at night. Don't even tend to charge stuff up at night. Have never had economy 7 or whatever as I think that encourages people to use electrics overnight..

I clean the filter on the tumble drier regularly and never leave it running when nobody is on the boat.
They use a lot of power, get very hot and there is no water about so it's a recipe for nasty outcomes.
Useful equipment only to be used when you can hear it working.
The one I have which is an indesit compact starts making loud grinding noises if it gets too hot. I guess that is the drum expanding with the heat.

A washing line is relatively fireproof. Except on Oz obvs. Use of a washing line also helps prevent Global Warming. Win win.
Put one of them spinney lines on the back of your boat, save the planet.

I would do that but the woman said hanging washing out makes us look like pikeys. It's a long story. My little sis not allowed a washing line in the garden as the blowing washing upsets hubbies idea of tidiness ...instead she had to climb a fence and hang WASHING in the cow field...this continued until she got fed up of the cows licking her washing and leaving green drool all over it....... She now uses tumble dryer..domestic peace restored. Edited again ... must learn to check my posts ... though suppose keeping certain poster entertained........

However, if it’s going to catch fire it’s going to catch fire whether you are in the house or not, awake or not. A friend of mine put his dishwasher on in the kitchen, retired to the lounge to watch telly. A while later he heard a “pop” sound which he thought might be a halogen bulb exploding in the kitchen, but when he went to look, the dishwasher was on fire. Unable to put it out they had to vacate the house, and there was a lot of smoke damage even though the house wasn’t actually totally burnt out.

SWMBO often puts the dishwasher on when we go to bed.

Smart meters are not a cheap way of using power but a means of monitoring the amount used in terms of KW or pence per hour (they are switchable) Phil
