I'm more proud of the fact that I can roller skate. What a beautiful tee shirt. Thank you, that was a classic skate style No Fear tee shirt because you have to look the part when you are "down dere wiv da kidz".

like a fish. scuba, kayaking, white water, bin there dunnit and luvvit. I've done a bit of kayaking but other than my near death experience in 1989 it mostly involved NOT swimming ! when I was a lad at the Warren Light Craft Club in Reading our Sunday afternoon entertainment was to roll our kayaks upside down, remove the cockpit spray deck, exit the cockpit and put our heads where our bums had been and allow the capsized boat to float downstream on the current. The afternoon strollers were confused - should they ring the police, jump in and find the missing boy or just pretend to ignore what was going on? It was difficult, but possible to re-enter the boat and roll upright again, but you had to be pretty clever to re-fit the spray deck while holding your breath, without which it was difficult to right the boat. Of course this left the strollers wondering if we could really hold our breath for 5 minutes. Reading Corporation was very kind - they allowed us to run kayak rolling training courses in the local swimming pool where we could perfect our performance.

I can swim but I haven't been swimming for years. Did that Bronze survival thing when I was at school though I doubt very much I could do it now. With that knee ! Rog

I had to be a decent swimmer as I was a member of Chester ladies rowing team in the 70s,plus I used to kayak over the weir.😊

The young lady behind seemed impressed. Well, I always say there's no better place to pull an impressionable 16-year-old than the local roller disco. That photo doesn't tell the whole story, I was just about to leap into the air, spin round three times and land backwards like a graceful swan.

I got stuck in an overturned kayak with a spray deck which would not release from the cockpit surround when I pulled the strap.
That was nasty as I never learned to do an Eskimo roll. Unfortunately I panicked. Did get out (obviously) but it took much longer than you would want it to.
It's not at all nice being upside down in a kayak with a jammed spray deck. Most unpleasant. Fine if you can do the roll but if not then you don't want to be there.
It was one of those old grp canoes with a sharp edged cockpit surround so the spray deck elastic got wedged under the lip and took ages to get off.

I also had lessons in a swimming pool on how to get out of a kayak ..... however it was a very different matter trying to do it from a capsized kayak, in a set of rapids when surrounded by all your spare clothes, camping gear, cooking gear etc etc. and no I didn't attempt an eskimo roll ..... not in a loaded cruising canoe made of wood and painted canvas and weighing ........ rather a lot ( before grp had appeared on the scene for ordinary mortals)
