The first time I tried to get in a canoe I only got my legs in as far as my knees before rolling over and out into the Thames in November. That was cold. It put me off canoes apart from paddling one across Windermere and back once.

I've done loads of kayaking since that incident but I would not use a spray deck on that type of kayak again. More modern ones have a plastic piece inserted there to help the spray deck come off.

I made my own kayak age 17 at school. Taught myself all sorts of manoeuvres but never learned to roll. Best trip was the Ardeche Gorge in a canoe, as a part of a trip to the south of France in a Leyland FG. We carried the Canadian canoe on top. A local grp company had found a sunken wooden Canadian in windermere, made a mould and were selling raw shells to scout groups etc. It was a lovely stable design. We fitted the woodwork ourselves. It was also ideal for the Atco Impeller Outboard.

I want an Atco Boatimpeller. It would have been just the thing for the dinghy when the field beside the boat was flooded as it can be used regardless of water depth. If anyone knows of one hiding in a shed looking for a new owner let me know please

I started canoeing at 11 and finished at 38 when I left the Army, I loved it and was an ACU instructor, I have done white water racing, slalom and finished as a sprint canoeist. Age captures up with you, eventually I was happy with just plain canoeing. Hardest thing I have done was canoeing in Norway, second hardest was canoeing around the North of Scotland bloody hard work!

I expect you know of George at Villiers Parts...I want a coil and points box for a 50s 102 but the cost...Jesus. I'm putting it together to see how it all looks before I decide.

It looks completely pointless in that video but I'm sure there is a knack to it.

I'm going to have to have a little rest now as reading that made me feel knackered Army mate you had to be fit and I would much rather paddle than run! The stuff is a lot lighter to carry as well, I have paddled in the recent past and still enjoy it and can still roll as well happy days

It looks completely pointless in that video but I'm sure there is a knack to it. It will work in 150mm of water. It will take you to the headwaters of the orinico in your shallow draughted punt.
