In a topic titled "Canal network maps" over on CWDF a new member calling himself Jason Peach posted the following query yesterday, and via some ill-considered and, frankly, quite inappropriate and stupid replies is getting some of the sort of advice which could land him in big trouble :
"Hi all. Jackie and I are new to boating and have just put an offer in on our first boat- we are so exited!!! The boat we are looking at it near York and we have to get it down to Leicestershire where it will be moored. Can anyone suggest the best canal network map book to get with detailed maps. Thanks alot."
Would any TB member able to post also on CWDF please direct him over here so he can be rather better advised, . . and given some idea of just what he could be getting himself into if, as a novice with an unfamiliar boat, he's encouraged by the CWDF comments to take on that trip at this time of year !

Done. Although it is hidden pending moderator approval, so is not visible yet.
ETA. I hope they approve it,as although you and I got off to a rocky start, I wouldn't want to stand in the way of someone getting as much valuable advice as is on offer, wherever it may be.
ETAII. Seems you can get around the mod approval by putting up an innocent post, publishing and then editing it.

Wasn't there a thread on canalworld about someone who narrowly missed a nasty situation up there somewhere?
Maybe linking to that thread might work.

We had a “nasty situation” up there, coming round the 90 deg bend just before Selby road bridge and finding an entire large tree totally blocking the bridge portal, with 3 mph of current behind us. Not much thinking time, and we just got under the non-opening part of the bridge with a foot to spare. Fortunately the cruiser in front gave us an additional minute or so of warning, which helped (but only because we had radio).

good !!! I would not like to think of a novice heading off on the Ouse as it has been just lately. I have got my fingers crossed for a jolly out to Naburn soon, but that's on a commercial boat and an experienced commercial skipper. edit to add ... that wasn't good to Nick having a nasty incident by the way but to the prior post from Rusty

You get an amazing amount of crap coming down after any flooding, as you say including quite big trees SAM_0981 by mudlarker2, on Flickr

Wow,the advice is coming thick and fast now. I was going to suggest this, but thought better of it: Joking of course, it's all water under the bridge now!

If you're on a river it's best in my view to be on a boat designed for the purpose. Just saying Rog

What a beast nature is sometimes. Edits to get the right video.

Just saying Rog Well yes I’d agree, but sometimes to get from one nice bit of canal to another, you need to go on a river. Most of us don’t have multiple boats so we can’t select the appropriate boat to use on any particular day.

To be fair a properly designed and suitably powered narrow boat will never get into any trouble on a river in normal situations. If there are floods then narrow boats are actually better than most other boats while moored to a river bank during floods because of the vertical sides which make it less likely you will get hooked up on the bank as the level drops.
