And then... My boat uses butane rather than propane and this has frozen up but other than that everything is ok and now it's getting light it is warming up a bit and I think it's going to be a lovely sunny day.

Absolutely clear sky here as well Vince. It makes a change from all the rain ...... the quay here is finally showing above the water (well at low tide anyway) which is a big improvement !!!

Had a bad thing happen yesterday the gas regulator which is outside had frozen open so when I turned on the bottle it gave full high pressure to the cooker. Oh dear. So glad the cooker isn't auto ignite as was just about to fire it up.
Nasty.

Very bad yes. Makes me glad I have always turned away from having candles or oil lights in the boat as well.
Boatt Safety man did pass the boat last week (yaay now have a Gold License) but suggested I get another regulator - he was right. It works fine now but that night it froze up. I was unaware of them failing open like that.
New one next week.

What gave you the clue that it had frozen open? Phil

What gave you the clue that it had frozen open? Phil I turned the bottle on and the cooker started hissing loudly when I opened the cooker valve to light it. Closed valve continued hissing. Full pressure seems to overwhelm the valves on the cooker. Turned bottle off straight away brought regulator in and warmed by the fire back on the bottle and it was normal again. It seems to be ok now not leaking on the low pressure. I suppose it's a slightly dodgy situation but confident there are no leaks. ETA to be fair it did make a slightly different noise on initial opening of the bottle valve but it was first thing in morning before cup of tea so brain not always fully engaged.

These are the mornings when I’m glad to have the keyfob remote for the Mikuni on the bedside table. The stove was still going but it was bloody cold in the bedroom. Press the button then arms back under the duvet until things have warmed up a bit!

It's actually propane not butane. The regulator froze due to water in it. Crap regulator.
propane (orange gas) does not tend to freeze like Butane can.
What I want is a bulkhead mounted regulator.

Boatt Safety man did pass the boat last week (yaay now have a Gold License) but suggested I get another regulator - he was right. It works fine now but that night it froze up. I was unaware of them failing open like that. New one next week. We've been told to replace regulator every 10 years, and the boat hire company we were moored at change theirs every 5 years. There was a set of faulty regulators (Made in Italy as I recall) and I had an article/warning about this on Canalworld - has been there all this time on their front page (recently removed? out of spite??!!).* We also do not have any flame/candle at the front of the boat/in the cratch as the gas bottles are up that end and you never know... My phone tells me it is -1C in Newbury now, here in the frozen wastes of Darkest Scandinavia it is just -2C. But did snow a fair bit overnight. A brief search reveals that they ghave shuffled things about and got rid of my very valid warning about regulators being faulty. But... there is still this, 4th post down: www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/82983-lpg-gas-regulator-recall/ What I especially like is: "they're celebrating 60 years of 'expertise' according to themselves" - yes, 'expertise' indeed.
