Lots of closures just after a change of landlord are because the grasping owners put up the rent for a new tenant, and tie them to overpriced supplies. The Vine at Kinver was ruined by such action, and it has never recovered. Why would anyone take on a pub that comes with to high a rent or overpriced supply’s? All comes back to knowing how to manage a business. I'd guess that the decision to take on a pub is often made without recourse to economic logic in favour of a dream, often twinned with alcoholism.

Why would anyone take a job picking spuds? Economics. Desperation.

I'd guess that the decision to take on a pub is often made without recourse to economic logic in favour of a dream, often twinned with alcoholism. I think that's it. Certainly every advert I've ever seem offering pub leases seem to appeal to the "living the dream" aspect, usually with a photo of a genial "mine host" holding aloft a foaming pint of ale while wearing a hail-fellow-well-met smile, rather than saying "Would you like to make shitloads of money?" Many pubs seem to go through an endless revolving door cycle of those looking for a graveyard for their inheritance or redundancy payout, a new mug every six months.

An associate of mine bought a derelict pub, did it up, staffed it with attractive posh tottie, sells very good well kept real ales and makes an absolute killing. No juke box, no gambling machines, no food apart from crisps at a fiver a bag. One of his very deliberate money making schemes was to rip out the carpet from half the pub when he noticed that in the tiled part people drank a LOT more. His reasoning was than when everyone had to shout to be heard on a Friday night their arm moved their pint to their mouth at least 2-3-4x as often. cunning! His take rocketed. So yes, if you keep your eye on the ball and get the basics right pubs can be good for the pocket. He does have alcoholic tendencies so he tries to keep out of the place himself.

Sounds very similar indeed to a pub near me. The Star at Sandal, Wakefield operates in a similar way. The owner has a micro brewery attched and his efforts are very popular. It really is a very pleasant place to sample a few and have a natter!
