I was reading a report stating that prostate cancer has over taken breast cancer as the most common form of cancer in the UK. It also stated that there were 898 new cancers diagnosed every day ... EVERY day. On average 3 people die in accidents on country roads every day in the UK ... EVERY day. I did wonder why the press have made such a big headline story of the new flu ... death toll world wide so far ... 100. Rog ............. err ............ do you not understand the words 'contagious' and 'epidemic' ?
wonder no more and be grateful that the media has brought this to everyone's attention, and hope that it is kept under control.
............. perhaps you have already forgotten about ebola that was only contained as a result of all the publicity. if that hadn't happened the world population would be significantly less than it is today (which might have been a good thing ).
if you think that flu is not a big issue, why don't you read up on the Spanish Flu (I believe it killed more people than WW1).

At various times in history varied forms of influenza has broken out and spread killing very many, but predominantly young, old, and those with pre existing medical conditions. Publicity is good ... awareness is good ... I happen to consider the current torrent of alarmist, propaganda is disproportionate and verging on the hysterical. Other opinions are available Rog

I think I got the idea off one of my bros but it also reminded me of the old BBC teletypewriter which did it in the 70s when printing off the football results. The suspense always did it for me. Shall I start a poll to see if we should ban it for a month?.....

'The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, the deadliest in history, infected an estimated 500 million people worldwide—about one-third of the planet’s population—and killed an estimated 20 million to 50 million victims, including some 675,000 Americans. The 1918 flu was first observed in Europe, the United States and parts of Asia before swiftly spreading around the world. At the time, there were no effective drugs or vaccines to treat this killer flu strain. Citizens were ordered to wear masks, schools, theaters and businesses were shuttered and bodies piled up in makeshift morgues before the virus ended its deadly global march.' (history.com)

Could be you and your family first in-line, who knows? I hope and expect that modern science will sort out the mess, but if it doesn’t let’s hope our friends and family are ok.

As of april last year their was 7.7 billion in the world so 10 billion is a bit of an overkill!!

Not blase at all, its either all of us die later, or some die earlier but the human race survives! Ian I was in the ARMY and the unfortunate reality is we were trained to kill along with other things, that made me a realist in lots of ways and we the human race are consuming the earth and its resources way to fast, and it aint going to slow down because only 10% or so care enough to do owt about it, As for science by the time we believe them it will be way to late to save us

Thankfully I wasn’t in the Army. Killing can never be justified. I’m pleased to say that I have a more optimistic outlook than you where the future of mankind is the topic. Who knows who will be proved correct eh?

Thankfully I wasn’t in the Army. Killing can never be justified. That's a bit of a simplistic comment. The Axis forces killed approximately 70 million in WW2. It took the deaths of approximately 10 million German and Japanese to defeat them and stop this rising further. I think that in broad terms, most people would find these killings justifiable, however regrettable.

Killing can never be justified. This is one of the hardest and interesting topics to discuss, but one I seem to remember was discussed in the playground. I think in the end you'd have to ask yourself would you kill someone who was going to kill you if that was your only option (or they were going to kill someone close to you)? We kill animals all of the time to eat if you are not a vegetarian, even then, we kill vegetables. Also, if you pay tax in any form, some of that money will indirectly be used to pay someone to kill others. Look at Syria for example. www.amnesty.org.uk/syrians-us-led-coalition
